hey guys

I am a newbie. I am building a 1977 chevy LUV for the drag strip only. currently I race a 1979 Nova and it runs 12.4's best is a 12.30. my question is I am going to take the 383 out of the nov and put it in the LUV with a powerglide. the 383 is well built 11 to 1 solid tappet cam 244 252 duration at .050 the motor can rev to 6500 no problem but don't want to do that all the time. I plan on running 3200 stall and 3.91 gears and 26 inch tall tires. just curious if any body out ther is ruinning anything simaler and how well the combo will work. looking for 11's the luv weighs about 900 pounds lighter than my nova. thanx guys

You'll probably need more gear than the 3.9. I ran a 4.30 with a 29.5 tall tire in the 1/4 and felt that 4.88 would have been better.

i have to agree with mytmouz on the gear, i'm running the stock luv rear end with the factory 456 with a 29.5 tire in the 1/8th mile, i don't really need to shift the turbo 350 into high and i'm turning about 6500rpm's. i'm in the process of building a 9 inch and i went with a 5.00 gear but i'm running all motor no nos.....yet.
mytmouz in about a month i hope we can do something on a kit, all i have left on the 9 inch is spring perches and a brake set up.

I agree also. If you were going to run a turbo 350 it would probably make it fairly easy on a 26 in tire. I have run a powerglide, 383 flat tappet, 28" tires and a 4.10 gear and it would dip into the 11's fairly easy. Got to make it hook and the motor has got to pull to 6500 and not fall on its face in the upper rpm range.

Just my .02

I run a 79 luv with a 406 backed up by a powerglide with 500 stall and 5.14's in the rear running 32 inch good years. It runs 6.30's-6.40's in the 1/8. that is too much gear for the 1/4 but some 4.88's would work int he 1/4. What igninition are you running? Are you going to use a transbrake? If you have the option to dyno the motor do it so you can see its power curve. I would use a higher stall just so you can launch a little bit harder. If you used a 4000 stall you could leave about 3600RPM and depending on the motors power curve, shift it around 5600-5900RPM.

Location: Colonial Beach VA. If i am not home or at the track then I am probably at HOOTERS!
I run a 350 with a th350 trans 9'' rear with 4.30s and a 26x8.5 I usually run 7.30 s in the 1/8th and this is a junk motor stock bottom end with decent heads and the cam is so old that crane says the numbes on the back arent in their system any more other than that I have $220 dollars in the whole motor.I have run a best of 6.84 on a 125 shot I think the 4.30s are a bit much for the 1/4 so I am going to 4.10 s next year so I can do double duty, new bullet will be in next year too 8) that should put me around 6.80 s on motor and hopefully around the low 6.40s on spray , might have to go to a glide then though

I talk to a few guys at the track last sunday who run powerglides. I told them what I was thinking about running. they all said to that everything sounds good except the covertor. need to run at leat a 4000 stall. my nova I race weighs about 3600 pounds with me in it. I believe the luv will weigh about 2700 with me in it. I am going to run a trans brake. the goal is mid 11's. I see a lot of gouys running a lot of gear and tall tire. my set is about the same as theres except not so steep gear and short tire. I know there is a lot of trail and error when you get the track I am just trying to do it right the first time

for drag racing the glide is the way to go. however you need to find one with the 1.76 planitary set. it's much stronger than the 1.82 since your going to hit it with the transbrake. i have a 496 with a glide and 4.30 gear and 32 in tire and run 9.75 . the one i built for a buddy had stock luv rear with 26 in tire 355 small block and a glide / it ran mid 11's on foot brake.
the glide will be more consistant as well. easy to build too. plenty of aftermarket parts.

hey Jeff

what gears were in your friend LUV that ran the mid 11's, and what stall convertor. I ordered a bunch of parts for my powerglide. rebuild kit, turbo spline input shaft, and billit clutch hub.

next week will order the valve body.
my goal is to run well into the 11's

he was running 4.11 gears in the stock luv rear with the spider gears welded together. he has a 4000 stall converter from art carr.
when i had my small block it too had stock rear with 4.11 gear and 26" tires. ran low 11's.

ok guys I'm going to take some of the advice you guys gave. I am going to run a 4000 stall convertor. I was going to run 3.91 gears but a friend of mine had a 4.11 gears. still going to run 26 inch tall tires. with the powerglide. should work well and run well in to the 11's. I also tires the camaro headers I have in the luv. looks like they will fit when I get the the old engine perches out. need some with coilover springs for the front. need a part number or manufacture.
