Hey guys-

One of my friends is giving me a 1979 4wd Luv. It has a decent body, frame transmission, transfer case, etc, but NO engine. He also has a engine out of the same year (I think) 2wd model that is is giving me as well. Guess he's taking that one out to swap a 350 chevy in some time in the future.

Anyways, I went over to his place today and soon figured out that the 2wd engine doesn't directly go into the engine bay. I assume that I need to replace the oil pan with the 4wd version. Are there any other parts which need to be changed around during this conversion? I'm hoping to buy all the parts that I need now so I don't have to run back and forth next time I'm trying to get this thing going.

Thankss for the help..

You need to swap the flywheel also. The 4x4 has a little bit bigger clutch

It's obvious from CHEVYLUV80's post, but you'll need the appropriate clutch for the 4x4 flywheel.

You might want to examine the clutch vs. the engine, as I believe there were both hydraulic and cable actuated clutches across the years. I've been looking at this same scenario myself ('77 engine -> '79 4x4), let us know how it goes :)

All 4x4s and everything 80 and up used the larger clutch disc. The flywheel is different, but I think everything else lines up just fine. You should be able to mix/match the parts as long as the flywheel, clutch disc, and pressure plate are all matched together. The only piece that meets up in there is the throwout bearing and I believe they are the same where it counts. The splines on the shaft and the pilot bearing are the same either size of clutch disc you use.

I've been thinking about doing a flywheel swap on my 77 when I put in the 5 Spd tranny, but I don't have it apart yet to confirm all this stuff visually.

Ok...I'll let you guys know. Right now I'm getting an 4X4 oil pan. I don't need to get a different sump for it?

I have 2 sets of flywheel/clutch/pressure plate combinations. At least one of these is almost brand new, I think one is a 4X4 model, and one is worn and smaller than the other one, so I'm pretty sure that is a 2wd truck model.

I'll report back when I have more info to share. Thnx for the responses.

a 4wd engine will work in a 2wd. i put a g180 from an 81 luv 4x4 in my 77 2wd. the 81 engine has the larger 8.6in clutch, so i just got a clutch kit for the 81 truck, and used it with the 77 tranny. all isuzu 4 cylinder trannys have the same transmission input shaft (24spline x 1in).

i dont think there should be a problem with the oil pan. ive got a 2wd and 4wd engine sittin next to each other in the garage, and they both have the oil pan.

if the oil pan doesn't make a difference, it must be something else. The 2wd engine will not go into the 4wd chassis. The oil pan is currently hitting the front drive line/axles.

I have the motor mounts for both the 4 and 2wd versions. They seem identical. The only other thing I can think of is the oil pan. Guess I'll be making a trip to another junk yard (u-pull it style) to take a look at the 4wd luv there.

I bought a oil pan today, supposedly 4wd, and yeah...it looks very similar to what I remember a 2wd looking like. Not good!!

The 4x4 pan is different, different part number at least. The mounts are the same, but the pan is built to clear the front axle/diff/etc. I am not sure if the sump/pickup tube are interchangable. Have to check on that...
