theres one on my 80 4x4, i dont know what it does, and im trying to get rid of all the stupid wires and vacuum hoses under the hood and underneath the dash. Do i need it for some reason? Im beginning to think my truck is a California model, cuz it had a bunch of extra vacuum hoses, smog stuff, and a catalytic converter. Im putting the rebuilt engine in as soon as Mokadeth gets the manifolds from offy, and as soon as i get my butt in gear  and put it together. I dont need all the extra weight and headaches that come with reattaching all of that mess! Oh, and can anyone tell me what else can go, as far as emmissions b.s.? thanks for yer time!

Normally an engine speed sensor is used to measure engine speed (duh...lol)for electronic ignition, cruise control, etc.

A lot of fuel injected or computerized vehicles have them along with the coolant temp sensor, air intake flow sensor, vehicle speed sensor, fuel pressure regulater, and the throttle position sensor for emissions and to regulate timing, fuel/air mixture, etc.

All it does is measure your engine's rpm's.....and you might want to check your manual for what it's used for on your truck.

If I remember correctly--the speed sensor allows the coasting richer solenoid to to open and let in a small amount fuel if---the engine speed is 2000 rpm or above, and it is in 3rd or 4th gear, and the throttle is closed (coasting). It supposed to help with emissions and eliminate backfire while coasting.
