Check and clean ( with sand paper) all ground wire connections.
Including all the fuses in the fuse block.
Make sure you have ground wires from the cab to eng., and eng. to frame, and cab to frame.

What issue, are you having? Gen light on? With the engine running, what is the voltage at the battery?

Like Ron said, as these trucks get older, all of the electrical connections tend to corrode a bit, and all of them need to be repaired and/or thoroughly cleaned.

And unfortunately, when you buy a used truck, you are at the mercy of everyone else that has worked on it's wiring skills.

Don't give up...you aren't alone because just about everyone here has had to fight with some electrical demons.

Dirty/corroded connections at the fusebox is usually the main culprit. Some members have even made their own with the newer type blade fuses and replaced the stock setup completely.

Hang in there!

k...the issue that i am having with the charging system is that it's not charging. Most if of my guages do not run, so i wouldn't be able to tell if the gen light was on or not, the only ones that do work are my speedo and my odom. while the truck is running the battery jumps from 12.5 to 10.9. at the alternator it sits at about .2

You may well have more than one problem. With the ignition turned to on, but without the engine running, check the voltages, at the back of the altenator. The large output wire should have the same reading as the battery. The field wire(white, with black stripe) should be 10 - 11 volts.

If you've already cleaned up all of your connections, then I'd take a look to see if you have good connections at the ignition switch and if that isn't the problem, then I'd start unwrapping the wiring under the hood to look for the problem.

The information section here has the wiring diagrams, so that should help if you don't have access to one yet.

http://www.luvtruck.com/PDF/Series5.pdf

You can download that .pdf file, open it with adobe reader and print it out if you need to. I took the one for mine down to kinko's to enlarge it and laminated it. That way it's easier to read and I can use fine point dry erase marking pens in different colors to trace stuff down, and just wipe the stuff off when I'm done.

If you don't have adobe reader...you can get the latest version for free here:

Good luck!

you could always do as i did and just remove the stock alt, buy a one wire setup alt built for a small block chev, and build yourself a couple new brackets to mount it with, i thought that was easier than doing it the other way, i went through 4 voltage reg's 2 alts, and a whole lot of knuckle busting hours before i just said screw it and went the other way.. after that i never looked back

X2!!
After a new Vreg, alt, link, battery & needing a jumpstart 2 days later
I did the 1-wire alt swap, too, but got it built in a case with stock mounting points.
I will add that on top off cleaning all grounds, get new charging system/battery leads!
The original cables used were pretty thin anyway & some of the old brittle strands may be broken &/or have more corrosive resistance to + flow.

i wish i was close enough to go to some one near me and do that, wich you did. Unfortunately i live in washington and florida is a long drive to get an alt made... im not big on shipping for stuff.. unless i absolutely have too, ide rather build anything i need than buy it if possible.... but anyway if you wanna get past the headache of the stock 30 year old crap.... well... moderfize(modernize/modify) it!
