another Q. Im at TDC, the crankshaft is on right, its aligned with the 0 notch, the #1 and #4 pistons at top, and the oil pump notch is offset forward, and i could see the dot pointed towards the oil filter when I had the oil pan off. The problem is when I put the distrubuter, (i aligned the mark on the distrubeter to the timing cover i made before i took it out) I'm pointing more towards tower 4 than tower 1. like im 180 deg out. should i just compesnate by switching plugs, or what ealse could i do? thanks. Any ideas would be great. maybe my dist cap is marked wrong(from the factory), i forgot what it looked like before i took it apart.... should i try turning over the engine 360 deg, then the oiul pump notch might come around to #1 tower????

According to my recollection of the book, #4 is correct for the alignment you describe. The notch offset forward would point the disti at #4 on the cap. I know it doesn't make a lot of sense, but that is how the book says to line it all up. My 1980 was put together backwards by the prior owner and it took me a while to figure it out, finally got it running by swapping the plug wires on the cap 180 degrees.

You don't mention where the camshaft marks are pointing, that makes a difference too. With everything lined up like you describe both valves on #4 should be closed, the mark on the camshaft should be right on the top aligned with the mark on the rocker shaft holder. The head was redone on that 80 I have and I think the cam was what got put in backwards.

As 800 said that is correct. I just finished rebuilding my engine and I was questioning that also.

The crank should be at 0
The cam mark should be aligned with the cap mark
The mark on the oil pump should be pointing backwards towards the rear of the engine.
This in TDC for #4 cyl. I know it sounds backwards but it is what it is.
