OK---I made a deal on a New Old Stock tube bumper for my Chevy Luv and I am working on getting it mounted up on my Luv. The problem I am running into is the previous owner welded 1/4 steel to the frame of my Luv in order to mount a monsterous rear steel bumper which I got rid of. The rear bumper which he had mounted weighed 320 pounds!!!! I weighed it! My truck drives much faster without that now...:) I need to mount this new bumper to pull a small utility trailer.

I need to use the 1/4" steel mount remnants remaining to get the bumper mounted. Any advice on drilling through this? After drilling for 45 minutes yesterday I didnt make much progress and I didnt want to burn my drill up so I stopped.....I might be using the wrong type of drill bit though. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

the simplest way is to rough cut it with a torch

but a good drill bit with alot of oil will work .... just have to use alot of patients. If you have alot of old drill bits and you have been thinking of buying one of them drill bit sharpening tools, now would be a good time.

Best way is to put it on a drill press, but I dont think you have that option.

I would go with the torch because I would not have the patients with the drill, just try and cutt them out a little small rather than 2 big ,you can always go back and cut them bigger

Also drill a smaller hole first then come back and drill to the size you want.

Exactly! Even split it up three sizes if you need to. It depends how big you want to end up. Use some sort of cutting oil. Slow down your drill speed on the large bits if you can, they will last longer and cut almost as quickly.

That's the key right there. Drill a small hole first, a medium one, then the actual size. Use lotsa oil and you'll be good!

Like what everyone else said, pilot hole first. You can't beat that process for ease and not burning up bits. Use cutting oil if you have it, if not Marvel Mystery oil or WD40.

Drilling the mounting holes in the 1/2 steel for the custom lower ball joint mounts I made I jut got myself a quality bit and continually bathed it in WD40 while pushing about as hard as I could.

Use a good drill/cutting fluid as it is made to do what you are doing as it cools the bit as well as lubes.
