To compliment Larp's random thought thread, I thought I'd start a thread about phobias. Everybody has one, but not all are the same.

To kick it off, Ill share mine and my other half's.

First I'll share mine:

I really hate big snakes.

Not the little harmless snakes that kill bugs in your yard called gardner snakes - I mean bigger snakes like constrictors or big rattlers, etc.

When I was a young GI in Viet Nam, I had an unfortunate run-in with a rather large constrictor while I was sleeping on a cot that decided to climb in the sack with me and say howdy as it wrapped itself around my arm and one leg and scared the bujeebus right out of me. Another guy that was awakened by my screaming shot and killed it and the rest of the guys came to my rescue and cut the darn thing off of me, and ever since then, I can't even go anywhere near any type of big snake at all. I can't even watch shows on TV or movies about big snakes.

Now for my other half's:

She really hates birds.

When she was a kid on a farm near Cedar Rapids, Iowa, her cousins locked her in the chicken coop while they cut off a few chicken's heads and tossed them over the chicken coop fence so they could laugh at her while they flopped around and she freaked out.

Now she can't get near a bird cage or have any birds fly by her without having an anxiety attack.

So let's hear it everybody - what's your phobia - spiders, bugs, bees, fear of flying, fear of heights, sharks, fear of water, etc. ?

What gives you the creeps and the heebie jeebies?

C'mon - don't be shy - 'fess up.

I ain't skeered of nuthin... honest

But the one thing that will stop my pretty much in tracks is electric shock. Even the static pop you get from walkin across carpet on a dry day, then touching a door knob. Or the shock I get sometime when I get out of a car.

May stem back to when I was about 3 or 4, I found one of my Mother's bobby pins in the floor and stuck in a wall outlet... my Dad later told me it was a 220 we had one of those old "swamp cooler" window unit A/C's hooked up to. Not only shocked the piss out of me, but 'melted my thumb and forefinger together.

Now if it's what scares me that I really hate, It used to be my Mother in law, but she's gotten older now and I think I can take her...

For me it is more about the situation. I don't mind spiders and I don't mind tight spaces, but put the two together and I'm not happy. Was crawling under a house (crawlspace only) once to run some phone line and found out it was loaded with black widows only after I was quite a ways under there and saw one inches from my face.

I cured my ex of her spider hysteria actually. We were driving in the LUV on the highway and one crawled up the back window. She started screaming and I just yelled back at her to grab something and kill it because I was busy driving and didn't want to kill us both ini heavy traffic. She grabbed a paper sack and let the poor bugger have it. After that she took care of them herself instead of freaking out.

My brother is the snake-o-phobe. He is fine as long as they are not right up in his face though, more a healthy fear than a phobia. He even got an Indiana Jones T-shirt that says "I HATE Snakes!" so he can still poke fun at himself.
