I was reading on the internet about converting any stock AM/FM analog radio into a digital MP3 player powered by a computer. Has anyone ever seen this done at a show or ??? I thought the notion was fairly neat especially if you dont want to cut your dash all to pieces to get an aftermarket radio in. Just curious.....Thanks!

My son has something like that in his truck, the 'device' has some internal storage and USB, micro SD flash, and Ipod type interfaces. It is hidden under a seat etc, then basicaly transmits it's output to a station on the stock radio. Pretty cool.

I have one of those in my truck for my ipod. They work like the old FM modulators for the first CD changers. They simply "broadcast" the signal over an FM frequency and your radio picks up the station just like a radio station. The sound is not great but it does enable a MP3 device to be played on ANY FM radio.

I too have one for the Zune. It only transmits on FM though so you would have to get the Luv AM/FM radio to make it work. Honestly though I don't recommend this product because it loses fidelity but more importantly, it isn't reliable and you have to change stations frequently due to interference with other broadcasts.

A better option is the kind that goes inline with the antenna cable. That one blocks out the broadcast signals and just passes your signal in. No interference with this route.

For older radio's without alternate inputs, those are about the only options available.

Looks like a fun project, for a rainy weekend, or 30 :).

There was a time when I would be all over that like a bum on a baloney sandwich... just for the geek effect :). But 12 years of networking and dealing with computers for a living and it seems to have spoiled any "hobby" effect it used to have. But, yes it is totaly do-able.

I actualy bulit something similar to that about 6 years ago, installed in a Maxima I used to commute 50 miles to work in, serious lack of radio stations... consisted mostly of a small aluminum pistol case, credit card sized DV camera remote control, a scavenged laptop, external firewire harddrive and a pretty wild bungee suspension sytstem to protect the hard drives from shock and vibration.

Now, I settled for the easy route, decent CD player w/USB, SD flash interfaces... just load up a 5Gig or so USB stick and plug it in, sucker even display the id3 tags for the files :)

Wow! 8O 8O 8O

It seems like a lot of money, time, and effort to go through just to make your own car stereo. Using a lot of open source linux software and an expensive Via mini-atx pc would not be my choice. I notice it took the guy years to do this.

My stereo in my truck has 180 watts, has an am/fm tuner, plays cd's, has a usb port for flash memory sticks, an auxiliary plug for my mp3 player, and a memory card port - and I bought it at a local Target store for less than $100.00.

For portable music storage, I've got a seagate 2.5 gig portable usb mini hard drive, a seagate 5 gig portable usb mini hard drive, a 1 gig memory card, an mp3 player that has 512 mb's of onboard memory plus a memory card slot built in that takes up to 1 gig memory cards, and a 1 gig usb flash memory stick.

And I also have an fm modulator adapter for my stereo that plugs into my cigarette lighter that will play music from a usb flash memory stick, portable mini hard drive, or an mp3 player.

But then I own a pc repair and sales business and I buy all of this stuff at cost..so I can afford all of that computer geeky stuff...lol
