Any of you guys know anything about HEI distributors?I put one into my camaro that had a points distributor and the problem I'm having is I'm not getting any spark to the wires but I'm getting power to the distributor cap.Anyone know what the problem is?

the brain (module) is prolly dead. From what I remember you can't check the module with an ohm meter, you have to know someone or somewhere that has a checker for it. Call around and find out. The modules can go out with no reason whatsoever....Advanced auto has lifetime warranty on them, so that is good.
Make sure the pickup wires aren't rusty or corroded also.
the module is alot easier to change than the pickup.....you have to take the entire distributor apart to fix the pickup..... :(
so hope it is the module.
hope this helps.

you might check the power wire , make sure it has a full 12 volts coming out of it . my old camaro had a resistor built into the power wire so you didn`t have to run a balast resistor to keep the points from burning up. when i switched to hei it gave me all kinds of fits.like hard starting because it wasn`t getting the voltage it needed. also check the coil i have had quite a few of the stockers go south.

These tips are right on the money. If your getting a solid 12 volts to it and assuming you have the lead connected to BATT instead of TACH, the only problems that you may have are the coil and the module. You can do a resistance check on the coil. It would be a good idea to check that first before you buy a new module even though the module is known to fail more often than the coil. Modules are also known to fail after they warm up and work again when it's cool only to fail again when hot.

Ok I had the module checked at autozone it is working fine.I definately have 12 volts running to the distributor.I don't know how to test the coil, and I also bought a new pickup coil.I'm going to install it hopefully that is the problem. The coil I believe is new but if anyone knows how to test them let me know how I would appreciate it thanks.

make sure you have the hot wire hooked up to the right place. one connector should say + and the other should be Tach. otherwise i would borrow a module from a buddy and try swapping it in. Best way to test a coil is to hook it up to your tongue and... j/k

The coil itself must be correctly grounded inside of the cap. If the coil was replaced, it's possible that the mount screw that secures the grounding tab is corroded. Take the coil back out and clean the screw with a wire brush, clean the surfaces of the coil were the head of the screw seats and were the grounding tab sits. Clean the surface of the ground tab too.

I scanned 3 pages on H.E.I. ignition systems from my old (71-78)Chilton's manual It has a troubleshooting tree and basic resistance readings. If anyone needs them, Let me know and i'll e-mail them to you. Open them with image view and make them actuall size so they can be read

almost forgot the little spring loaded bushing on the underside of the cap in the center... make sure you have one or its not burned up.

the pickup coils have been known for probs in early HEIs.

You should check the rotor also they can go bad. The spark will jump to the nearest ground. Thus grounding it out and not letting you get any spark. Also be POSITIVE you have it connected to the +.
