I have a quadra jet and I do not know anything about it. I fired off the fuel pump and gas seems to be leaking out of the rod that comes out of the top front of the carb. I have the regulator set at 5 psi. Is there a float adjustment or is it just the fact that it is a peice of crap quadrapuke.

Quadrajet is one of the best street carbs you can run when set right and working. They are not junk. I would think your rod is worn or the float level is too high but would think it would flood out if too high. But then again what do I know LOL

I agree with litemup the Q-Jet is the best fuel mixer there is, but to "damn" many want to be carb guys screw them up( i didn't say they were simple) I have done dozens of them and there is some things that do need attention but they are still good carbs.1 are you sure about the pressure as Q-Jets don't like more then about 6.5psi 2 It could have a heavy float witch is quite common.3 If its a used one you will most likely have to freshen i up.4 the biggest problem with Q-Jets is the throttle shafts get loose and need to be bushed this with a few other tricks the Q-Jet will last like the energizer bunny.( one word to the wize do not put the batterys in the bunny backwards)

LOL I did rebuild it and it was flowing out of the plunger at the top could have been because the float was jacked up too I dont know like I said I dont know jack about carbs. I do know that it was pretty easy to go buy a new Edlebrock and bolt it up with out any problems LOL the dumb thing even came with a DVD.

There is a pin that looks some what like a hair pin that retains the float so either it was missing or the float was to high and the float level on a Q-Jet is very critical. It is critical enough that you can change the idle mixture with just the float level and besides at least you tried and that is what counts(well some times it dose)

By rod in the front of the carb do you mean the vent tube? If so ya float/needle seat is hosed up. I can go through it for you if you want? Do you still have any big block cores?

Derek I am having a new problem with my truck I think its possibly the carb. The old Quadrajet was puking fuel out of the accelerator pump plunger. The new problem is it runs great just after it warms up but get about 3 miles down the road it feels like it doesnt have any power and it kinda backfires not like a full blown back fire but little pops and when I stand on the gas sometimes it pops pretty loud and then goes like nothing is wrong. The motor is a small journal 327 its fresh and has rebuilt heads on it from franklin. The cam is stock or not much more than that I have the initial timing set at 8*. I have the fuel pressure regulated to 5.5 PSI. Where should I start looking for my problem. I thought I had it fiexed until yesterday when I went for a drive When I was having problems with the Q-jet I forgot I dropped the pressure at the regulator to see if it was just getting too much pressure.

Well I think I would start with float level, what did you set it at? Also if its popping check the secondary air valve spring tension and the choke pull off that keeps the air door closed. It should be stuck shut at idle, and opens slowly at wide open throttle. If this isnt set right it wont work for squat at wide throttle. The air vlave spring should be set at one turn for a truck, and the choke pull off should just have a little slop in it when it is shut. Some Q-jets have little fuel orfices right above the air valve, and if so, you want the air door to open just enough to be above these orfices. If you dont have them best to set it so its fully closed at idle. You want to set the carb as close to stock as possible to get a baseline, something that works. Then you can play to get more power out of it. Hope that helps!

I didnt set the float level. Edlebrock claims their carbs are ready to run right out of the box so I just bolted it on and and set the idle mixture screws. Approximatly what should my float level be set at?

Looking back at your posts and you stated 8* static timing toss the hose to the vac. adv. and jack the timing to 12*-16* and check the total it should be about 36*-38*adjust it tell you get it there then check the static timing but if it will start hot don't worry about it.This is a rough way to get you in the ball park next lesson will be the adv. curve.
