Sooo, I figured out a way to fix this carburetors problems!!!
Image
I gave in, I crumbled
soo I got a
Image
its a 34 DGEC,
Was $30 cheaper
Image
This is what it came with
Image
The Adapter one Piece
Image
Doesn't Quite fit
Image
Nothing a little hacksaw won't fix
Image
Hacking
Image
Now it fits

Sitting Pretty
Image
Main Valve kept hitting the adapter on the way down. At first i thought it was just hitting the paper gasket but after tightning it down a little it also hit the aluminum so i got some grinds will i grinded away. Nothing taste better than aluminum shavings on Papa Johns pizza :smt035
Image
Umm now it fits, i swear its a different pic. I flipped the valve on the right, why, Idk, oh yeah tried using the old linkage but it wasn't quite right.
Image
I think I am an accomplished "make Fit" artist
Image
Started it up, was a little slow on the idle, turn the screws a little after it warmed up and then it settled into a quite roar. Revved beautifully no missing, no rocking back and forth on the engine mounts and no putt putt smoke out of the muffler (except for the first start up)

NOW NEXT MISSION Make an adapter to fool...cough cough I mean Pass smog
IMHO if it is running better than its got to be better than the guessing they were doing back in the day as far as emissions goes. hmmm lets put a valve hear, pump some air there and wham no more Global Warming.
Heck , i bet I have a small hole in the Ozone above my house after dealing with the hicrappy.

Oh BTW, what pushed me over the edge you ask?
I went today to try and see if I could find a mechanic worthy of this task, Two Pointed towards Bob's carbs and wouldn't even look under the hood.
Went to Bob and he wouldn't even consider working on it BOB does nothing but carbs, By the looks of his shop he needed some work and still wouldn't bite. Bob's 34 years of experience said the hitachi is like a plague. It was like trying to make a dog eat his crap, wait i bet that woulda been easier.

I coulda saved myself so much energy and Ulcers and coulda used all my efforts in making an adapter.

Soo any ideas for making an adapter, PVC and Rubber are Calling my name!!! Home depot here I Go!!!!!

Thanks To all you guys who tried to help me.

Excellent news!

That's the same kit I put in mine just a few weeks ago, I had the same issue with the vlave hitting the gasket. I was just about to start shaving away on mine, but realized I just needed to nudge the gasket forward(toward the engine) before tightening it all down...for the 4th time

Didnt have any trouble with the throttle linkage adapter, except figuring out that it was not supposed to mount to the reatainer on top of the valve cover :) ..... I know, RTFM. But who has time to read?

From the picture it looks like you may have a taller than normal bolt in you thermostat.

Congrats

Keep us posted on what you do for the air cleaner. I might end up going that route with my 80 also. My 78 runs like a top, but the 80 just doesn't quite get it. They are both stock Hitachis.

for some reason, even nudgine the adaptor forward and the gasket, the valve was still hitting, enough to make some shavings. I think it will be a lot easier to pass smog with this on than to get the Hitachi to work :)

sweet sweet. um the breather up top, is that the same as running the line to the filter? What did you do with the fuel return line thingy, i just plugged it and placed it under the filter so that it looks more stock lol, now i just gotta make it putt and it will pass smog lol. umm any hints to adjusting the fast idle the screw fell off during the install and... NVM it should be soo much easier. On the weber, turning the screws does what it's supposed to. Only thing is they could use some better quality fastners and thread right or wrong. Everything seemed to fit quite loose except the hex screws to hold the adapter down, do you agree?

The breather on the back of the valve cover is temporary it's a oil fill filter thingy I picked up at Autozone , will put in an oil catch resevoir ala ctmandu, later. For now it just keeps from blowing oil all over the place. Didn't want to vent it back into the carb to avoid oily gunky mess. Not sure if this is right, wrong or doesn't matter, but what the heck, it runs. plugged my fuel return line as well.

Only complaint I had was actualy my own fault, while I was deciding wether the stock linkage would work or not I had the Weber linkage nut taken off and the carb sitting on the valve cover, well a few vibrations later I heard the clatter of some small part falling into that region of no return down past the intake to god only knows where. Turns out it was the brass spacer next to the inside of the linkage... glad I keep a wide variety of spare nuts laying around. I looked for at least 30 minutes for that spacer, nada.

I di use a small bit of locktight on the spacer hexes and mounting harware.

There is an adapter already made that bolts right to the top of a weber carb to allow you to use the stock Luv air cleaner so you can pass smog easier. The top of it is exactly the same size as a stock hitachi carb's is.

Someone posted a link to it around here somewhere a while back, but darned if I can remember who or where...lol

The issue I had with that adapter is that my hood wouldnt close with it on..... All those adapter plates on the stock intake raised the height of the carb up quite a bit. If I got one of those offy intakes, I am sure it wouldnt be an issue. I am moving to CO, so maybe they wont require my 30 year old truck to be smogged.
