The blue painters tape is awesome, nice sharp edges and the fact that paint is being rolled on helps prevent the paint from wicking under the tape. I had the same aplication of tape on throughout the process when I did mine. Even through all the wet sanding, washing and rinsing. Also did a great job when I re applied the black.

Would work fine for re-striping. Will be doing mine possibly this fall.

Anyone here ever try cornstarch for buffing out paint?

A local guy here that has a tricked out 72 chevy shortbed stepside uses it mixed up in a plastic sqeeze bottle to buff out his paint jobs (with a buffer) that he does in his back yard and they look better than most expensive shop paint jobs.

He says it's fine enough to give a great shiny finish and won't burn through the paint. He also uses it to buff out older dull paint jobs for people to help detail their cars for shows, and the before and after pictures are pretty impressive.

I've personally never tried it...I was just curious to see if anyone else had.

Interestin idea.

Have heard that "old style"-non gel, Colgate type toothpaste makes a pretty decent subsitute from polishing metal and removing light rust. Actualy tried it once on a Old Timer pocket knife, did a pretty good job.

I've used the toothpaste trick on the platic headlight lenses to remove the yellowing, works pretty good if it's just on the outside. The cornstarch deal is one i never heard of, but I don't see why not. BUT, if you hold the buffer in one place too long, it'll burn through, trust me...

Met 79 today. Have to admit I would have never believed it if I hadnt seen it. The paint is amazing it would be hard to convince someone that didnt know it was painted with a roller. He has an extremly clean truck. One of the nicest ones I have ever seen and to be a daily driver is cool.

Question. I am going to attempt to paint my own truck using this method. I want a bright orange paint and my local stre does not have it. Is there some special internet location people are flocking to to get out of the norm paint colors?

Thanks for your help.

Several posts I've read from the Moparts forum, stated the poster was able to get their paint mixed at the store. Though most were able to get the colr they wanted in the can, I would recommend check some the company's web sites.
http://www.yachtpaint.com/USA/general/c ... psides.asp

Rustoleum makes a "Safety Orange" that is pretty bright.

This Charger was done with Rustoleum Orange http://s32.photobucket.com/albums/d13/6 ... C02769.jpg

Also consider the need for a afew rattlecans in the same color fr door jambs and other hard to reach areas. I wil say the Rustoleum Enamel and spray Safety Red are near identical.

That's cool, I have emailed Martin Tibensky aka 69Chargeryeeha, the guy from the Moparts forum who started the whole thing, and he said he has had emails and letters from tremclad i.e. Rustoleum, stating they had caught wind of his process etc.

They have even sent him cases of paint on a few ocassions to experiment with. :)

Figure it's only a matter of time before someone tries to put something in book form and steal all his idea. Did the article mention names at all? Which mag was it? May give it a read.

Just read the article too, think they did the process as much justice as could be fit on a deadline, paint looked good for white and honestly think they would have had a better shine had they not "cheated" and baked the car @ 160*.
This paint tends to buff much better and easier within 36-48hrs of the last coat drying 'normaly' and is still "soft"

Think they described it as a 4 foot finish at best, I'd beg to differ on mine, but being my baby, I guess I'm biased ;)

And no, they realy didn't give proper credit to the guy who started the whole thing, Martin Tribensky. Hell they should at least give the guy a free subscription.

It has started. I stripped mine to the bare metal. There were so many layers on it, it was just as easy to do that as getting it to the original color. Used some aircraft remover, some sandpaper, and a grinder with a stripping wheel. It took about a day to get one side to bare metal.

Just got one side started for now. I didn't want to leave the side exposed.

I wanted the original light blue, but Home Depot didn't have it. Hell, I've always wanted a red truck. :)

Here it is after one coat.

Sweet!!

You using Rusto Safety Red? The spray is almost a perfect match to the can, works great on the spots a roller can't reach.

How many coats you plan to do?

Yeah, it was a toss up between that and the grey.

Not sure about the coats. Just as many as it needs, I guess.

On the hood, actual automotive paint. Its about 10 years old, but it wasn't taken good care of. My grandfather had it for about 7 years and let it sit in the weather.

No primer. Just rustoleum. The rustoleum is designed to go on whatever, so hopefully it does what it should.

Since your starting from bare metal, I would plan on going at least 12. Depending on how thin your coats are. I put 12 on mine but I painted very thin to avoid as much orange peel as possible. Made sanding a whole lot easier.

Hi guys, Ive been watching this thread from the beginning and I have decided Im going to give it a try. Im thinking of trying to add a hardener to give it a longer life. Have any of you guys tried this. Im going with the Royal blue with a gloss white between the body lines

Don't have any personal experience with needing or using hardners in this process. But from everything I have read on the original Moparts forum, and emails with Martin, the guy who started the whole craze, hardners aren't necessary or even usuable with the types of paint used and the process of rolling it. Have had mine on for close to a year now in the Texas elements and it's still hard as nails.

Links to all of the origanl threads and process can be found here. http://rollyourcar.com/aboutus.aspx
