Just put a new motor together for my truck and tried to fire it off today and the positive battery cable started to smoke right where it meets the terminal. What should I be looking for to solve this problem? The battery is a side terminal type.

Kind of sounds like you have some wires crossed somewhere... Id start with the starter then the alt and ignition system.

Might try seeing what the ohms are from the pos battery cable to the body or another ground... see if there is any resistance

I did a resistance check between the pos cable and the ground every thing checked out ok all though the cable is pretty rough in a few places I got a replacement to install. I was in a hurry when I typed up the post and forgot to mention the thing only smoked when I had the fuel pump on so if its not the battery cable Im guessing its probably somewhere along the fuel pump wiring. Im not looking forward to changing the cable since there isnt much room between the headers and the starter heat shield.

Problem solved it was the cable. The insulation on the cable was gone in a spot that was rubbing on the front of the starter.

because the guy that had it before me was a butcher and every time I would turn around it would something new that I didnt want to have to do so I just got sick and tired of dealing with it.

I thought you sold it cause it was too fast after you put the tunnel ram 327 in it, and everytime you drove it you had a laundry issue, and your wife said sell the LUV or you can do your own damn laundry??

If you are anything like me, the previous owners work is never good enough. I bought my LUV with a small block and still ended up redoing everything. I think it is a guy thing, at least that is what my wife said.

:? It seems that most previous owners were in the same club of "that guy can tear up an anvil with a feather "

I cant believe some of the stuff the previous owner did to my LUV. One of my favorite modifications he did was cut a hole in the passenger side trans tunnel and lopped off the dipstick so when you wanted to check the trans fluid or add to it you have to pour it in carefully not to spill on the carpet. whats a flexible dipstick cost like $40 bucks from lokar? Or how about those leaking valve cover gaskets you know the good old fashion trick where you tighten them down to like 240 ft lbs and they get all jacked up and leak and then you let it go for about 15 years. I bet I went through 15 cans of degreaser and about 3 days of my spare time to clean the engine compartment after I peeled the old motor out. Talk about preventitive maintenance the guy didnt even know the word.
My new truck I bought was kept up pretty good minus a few little things here and there like the motor. I got a good deal on the truck from my future father in law he pulled his monster motor out of it and threw in a 327 that was laying around the shop. It had some issues like a dead hole so he pulled it out and re ringed and I bought it in the middle of the motor being apart so I put it back together and re installed the problems I am having are probably my fault because I am little inexperianced with some of this stuff.

Experience is only gained through practice and work and you don't seem to be afraid of either so keep up the work and some day some kid will be asking you how to do his project. 8)
