I have a stock '72 luv with a dual point distributor and need to know why the engine dies while coasting downhill. it doesn't do it while going uphill . Any ideas would be well appreciated thank you.

Does your engine have an air pump on it?Sounds like when ya got your foot in it its ok. If it only does it when your coasting , it could be your return air flow.Check your vacume lines, and your vacume advance.

it has a spot for an air pump, but ther isn't one. there's also a bunch of crap going on with the emissions system. theres a switch on the clutch pedal that has to do with the carb richer solenoid, but for some reason it was bent out of position by someone.

Well im not sure, but it sounds like someone at sometime probly started to remove the emissions garbage, and didnt finish. I know on my 80 i removed all of that stuff! Not sure on a 72 ..but these engines work on a coasting richer system. Like a continuous loop. In other words if its not all hooked up , its not going to work right! When i got my 80 it had some of the stuff removed but not all of it...Man what a mess. There is a picture of my 80 luv with all the crap taken off in the project gallery. Wow what a difference in the engine.Alot more power and alot easer to make adjustments.I only had to fabricate one part , and that was under the intake. If you want i can send ya all the parts i took off.You pay shiping o.k. It adds up to 112lbs.And the air pump is good!

I live in Oregon, and all my emissions shit was gone when I got mine. Nothing left but a few dead ended hoses with plugs in them. You could take all of yours off too.

You still have to pass smog in Oregon if you live in the Portland Metro area or around Medford. You can find out more about whether you need to have your rig tested at http://www.deq.state.or.us/aq/vip/ The boundry for the Portland emissions testing area is rather large so take a look at the map located here to see if you have to get tested. It goes by the address where your vehicle is registered.

already registered, but having a helluva time getting it running.i bought a replacement manifold off a 73 luv and was told it would fit my 72. it doesn't though, so now i'm stuck with trying to get a busted bolt out where the intake bolts on to the exhaust. hane already tried an easy out but no luck

I've only worked on one 75 LUV and the rest have been 76 and newer, but I was under the impression that 72-75 motors were all exactly the same. I used to have motor with a thrown rod from a 75 I think, next time I get to where I stash my parts I'll see what else is left on it, head, exhaust, intake, etc. Maybe I have what you need sitting around collecting dust.

On the up side though, 74 and older rigs don't have to smog test in Oregon, so no matter where you live you can get away with removing all that smog equip.

There are a lot of vacuum hoses and fittings that could cause you problems if your smog stuff is only have removed. since it sounds like you've got it fairly much apart now is a good time to plug vacuum ports off that are not being used. There is also a coasting richer switch on the gas pedal too, but if the clutch switch is defeated somehow none of the rest should make any difference. That coasting richer circuit goes something like this: engage when a) gas pedal is not depressed, b) clutch is not depressed, and c) Transmission is in 3rd or 4th gear. Any one of those switches taken out of the loop and the whole circuit might as well not be there.

all i'm loking for right now is a g.d. manifold that will work on my truck. i'm not sure why the '73 one ain't right if that's what the junkyard's computer says should fit. I dont think it's the head from a 76 or whatever year is different. but if you do get around to checking out your old stuff , the manifold that does fit is stamped with 5c3g012 on it. i live in springfield, so it's not that far of a drive for me.

Since this post is 3 years old, it's unlikely that the poster has this problem still.
