Can you bolt up a 76 gas motor to an 80 4 speed?

Yes, well I think. I believe 76-80 are the same.

If both of the engines are the newer version 1.8 that has the exhaust and intake manifolds on opposite sides of the engine - then yes.

If they are two different types...then no.

The only thing you really have to remember is 75 and older do not mix with 76 and newer.

76 motor with 80 4spd trans, yes they will work bolt together. BUT, the 78-82 transmission is set up for a cable clutch, and a 76 or 77 truck would be set up for a hydraulic clutch. So for simplicity's sake, stick with a trans that matches the truck it is going in to, but the motor can be 76 and up.

I guess it all depends on what you are doing, motor swap or trans swap.

My post was already getting too complicated without bringing 5spds into the mix so I figured I'd just stick to stock LUV facts. :P The simple answer to the original question in this post is yes, but it wasn't clear if the motor was going into an 80 truck, or the trans was going into a 76.

I've got an 88 5spd from an Impulse ready to go in my 77 that is setup for a hydro clutch too. If you get into trans swapping, you just need to consider the clutch setup as a factor. Even then, it is not like it is impossible to change cable vs hydro, but it adds parts and work.
