If you remove the cowl the number should be on the drivers side right where the flat part of the cowl sits, and also on the drivers door plate, and it is on the frame but I never could find mine there.

If you own this truck, wouldn't it be on your title or registration?

Or you can try looking on the driver's side behind the seat in the corner around where the seat belt comes out...that's where some have it.

Yeah... If I can even find the title. This was a craigslist $400 truck. Nothing too official or anything.

As a last resort, assuming the truck is in your name, you can always go to your nearest vehicle licensing place, show your ID, give them your liscense plate number, and have them look it up on their computer and possibly make a duplicate copy for you. Or you could always call your insurance agent and have him/her look it up too.

LOL..BTW, I don't know what it's like where you live, but around here, if you get pulled over and don't have your registration and proof of insurance handy, you'll get a huge ticket. So shouldn't you maybe take care of that pretty soon anyway?

Odd thing is.... in many cases you can register a car in your name that doesn't even belong to you. And insure it for that matter. Scary...

I don't dirve this thing now. Needs new tags and OR registraion. It came from WA.

Maybe this is too obvious, but it should be on a metal tag in the driver's side door jamb, right below the striker for the door. It is also usually on a sticker on the door itself too, but that tends to get painted over. The tag on the cab in the door jamb is the official spot though, there isn't ever one on the dash unless the dash is from another type of vehicle.

The VIN under the cowl is on the driver's side right near the fender, but it is lacking the first few digits. It is basically the last portion, the serial number, which gives the year and the unique ID of that truck.

There should also be a VIN number right close to yer butt. It's under the bed, on a crossmember right by the gas cap. It's on the front of the crossmember, not in the center but close to the afore-mentioned body part. Wire-brush it and you'll find it. Let me know if you find it, and if it matches the one you already have. I know ya will...

Drop the first C, and ad CRN14 to it for a 1980 4x4. So your full VIN, should you ever find it, would read CRN14A8249164.

The A digit is the series, so the second on the cowl and the 5th on the VIN will tell you the year.

Check out this fine post where Roadshow Bob breaks down the standard VIN:
