Im sure this stuff is tough as anything, but Ive wet sanded epoxy primer before and it sucks. I cant help but think epoxy paint would be just as tough to sand on.

You may be right, wetsanding 'soft' paint is enough of a chore, can't imagine making it any worse. Think If I ever want or need a re-coat, I'm going to try Brightside.

Whats Brightside? My father-in-law has a couple cans of Rustoleum and I have some PPG dry pearls and metal flakes. Im gonna do some test panels with pearls and flakes to see if anything works.

Brightside is made by Interlux, I think intended for marine application.

Thanks, little bit more than $50. $100 give or take, but I did buy more paint than I needed, could only find the color I wanted in gallon size. The rest I chalk up to inflation  . It's been a while since "69ChargerYeehaa" posted the process.

Thanks 79-LUV'r! I have been reading up on your posts, and have finally completed enough body work to have one successful coat rolled onto my LUV! I am SO EXCITED to see the results too.

Sorry I have been focusing too much on doing my truck, and not posting my progress. Also, sorry for my crappy camera (phone) but here is a picture of my progress so far.

And here is what it used to look like...

I still have quite a bit of work to do!

thats after a few more coats, sort of lost count. I think it's time for the wetsand though.

as soon as I can gather some more time I can put more time to the LUV. I have been so bogged with HW the last two days though. I just turned in my 3 week programming project though, so hopfully my load will lighten a tiny bit.

I wetsanded for the first time, and have just finished applying my second coat. here is a quick picture update... I know you can't really see much of a difference with the camera I have, but up close you can tell it is more smooth.

Finally Finished! for the most part that is.

Apparrently the fumes got to me and I totally neglected the tailgate. I'll have to work on that.

I just slapped some paint over the bare metal in the bed till I can get moved back to Kansas for the summer, and bedliner it.

I am thinking about getting some other wheels, so I havn't done anything to them yet. If I don't then I'll do something to these over the summer also.

Then, I still have quite a bit of cleaning for the interior.

here is a link of some pretty nice quality pics I took with my roomates camera. (click on a pic to blow it up)

AND here is a pic. Looks just like it rolled off the assembly line!

uthe your truck looks amazing, great job. Wish I had the gumption and time to tackle mine with such gusto. 79-Luv'r yours looks as good or better than factory to me, thanks for sharing this thread and your progress.

I put myself through college detailing cars at a dealership back in the 80's and I have a few tricks that might help with the final stage of this style paint job...

The final result appears very similar to the old enamel baked on style factory paint available on 70's european and japanese imports. Toyota, VW and Saab come to mind. This is a huge plus becuase, #1 it's fairly hard to 'burn' through the paint, and #2 it shines like crazy when rubbed out correctly.

Wal-Mart has a thing called the 'PowerBall' by Meguires, they run about $18 but are well worth it. Put this on the end of a VARIABLE speed device, either a grinder (not a two speed) or a drill. There are lots of rubbing compounds available, but my best results were with liquid Zep products. They are available at most auto paint shops and some retailers. I put the liquid compound in a ketchup bottle to apply it. Will it splatter everywhere? You bet, that's half the fun...hahaha... I just burned out the paint on my old Saab, and I used a combination of Nu-Finish (liquid) and plain old generic rubbing compound. I put some of the rubbing compound in the ketchup bottle and shook it until it had mixed with the Nu-Finish. Came out awesome, and only took about 2 hours to do the whole car. Not one burn through, thanks to the PowerBall.

I'm hoping to paint my truck at some point also, but it's probably a couple of years, and a lot of body work down the road. Hope this is helpful, after all that work prepping and painting, this process should cut several hours off of the rub out time.

Thanks nuke, glad you like it. I saw one of those Powerballs but didnt get one, good to hear you like how they work. think I may grab one next time I see it.

A good friend of mine and his Dad, both been in the Auto body business all their adult lives, commented the finish I ended up with is equal or better than anything factory or BC/CC, without the hastle of CC. The Dad said it reminded him of cars back in the day, guys would take to shows. They would slather them with a realy thick laquer enamel paint job so they would buff out real purty right before they rolled them out to the floor for judging.

Anyone still interested in the $50-$100 paint process, check this site out. Couple guys from the HUGE MOPARts forum put up one to post process, materials and a few results. Alot easier to read.

79-Luv'r I'm curious how effective the blue masking tape was at keeping the black off the red? Or did you use something else?

This seems like a wicked way to get the graphics reapplied on the 4x4. I'm planning to take some butcher's paper and a big crayon and make some templates from what's on there now. The decals are 100% there, but badly faded on the hood. Rustoleum Gloss Orange and Sunburst Yellow look to be a close match to the original graphic colors. I'm going to try to heat gun the decals off and do the little bit of bodywork the truck needs. This way I could just paint the graphics back on IF I can find a tape that provides a clean edge. Ideas? What about rolled on flames? Scallops? Seems like this process would work just fine over the stock paint to provide some really creative graphics...

Thanks for the link :)
