wow guys

huge let down with my 79 yesterday.

i was drivin to my girlfirends house to pick her up for a movie and what not, the usual thing we do on a friday night, and i always pick her up in my truck, because i love it. lol

anyway, i was at a stop light and heard this little noise, so i pulled over and checked under the hood.

nothing wrong, nothing out of place, no loose connections, (i went over the whole thing pretty much) so i hopped back in and took off again.

another stop light, and i hear an even louder noise, but barely audible unless you were really listening for it, if that makes sense. and the sudden stench of something, that i thought was gas.

i IMMEDIATELY pulled off the road, and pulled into a nearby parking lot, and the truck started sputtering so i turned it off and coasted to a parking spot. and the stupid thing is i thought i was out of gas that was why it was sputtering, but then that freaking smell caught up to me again, so i thought my fuel line broke or something.

I get out of my truck and pop the hood and oil is just EVERYWHERE, all over the driver side of the hood, EVERYTHING is soaked in oil.

i almost collapsed. i couldn't believe what i was seeing, and i was so freaked out i started yelling and screaming, because i thought i blew my engine up again, but after checking it over, it was in perfect condition besides all of this oil. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from so I called my dad and asked him what it could of been, and while i was talking to him i calmed down and started to think, what is missing. something was RIGHT THERE, where is it. and realized something.

My dad and I, during the rebuild, rigged a kind of on the spot oil pressure gauge, we put the original sending unit into a T fitting, along with a heavy gauge on top of it, used for compressors, as a temporary fix until we got an oil pressure gauge installed, and he moved to indiana, completely forgetting we had that on there. it was HEAVY, and stuck off the block about 3 or 3 1/2 inches.

considering its only 1/8 in pipe thread in that tiny hole for the sending unit, it was bound to snap off, and it did, and thats what caused all the oil mess.

but the thing im worried about, is did i run it too long after that happened, and did i tear up my engine. i used an easy out to get the rest of that pipe thread out, and put the original sending unit (no more oil pressure gauge), and changed the oil out, to 20-50, got a new filter, the works.

i drove it today, it ran good, just had the heavy stench of burning oil, from all of it burning off

is 20-50 a bad way to go? my dad said since its not cold anymore a heavier oil would be better for it.

buttt i dont know if my dad knows what hes talking about sometimes.. lol

anyway, i know this whole post is just ranting on and on so im gonna end it.

let me know what you luv fanatics think about this. and btw, i only ran the truck for about.. 10 seconds, then turned it off, after the clunk.

Well I know a quart of oil sprayed on your engine will make one heck of a mess. It looks like a lot more than it really is. I can't imagine that you cranked a whole lot of oil out of a 1/8 inch hole. Any way I don't think 20/50 will hurt, as long as it don't get too cold.

Father Knows Best!! You better go to a lighter oil for winter though. I got a tee on my oil galley connection for an oil pressure gauge too, and it's working just fine. I'm going to take it apart sometime and redo it with teflon tape though, since it has a light seepage. I didn't hang it off the fitting like an air compressor though! It's mounted under the light switch. You don't need the heavier oil, just stay with 5W-30 or 10W-40, and make sure the fittings are tight. You should be fine. Rig up a gauge just to be sure.

How'd the date end?

How much oil did you have to add to fill it back up?

He changed the oil, so it wasn't just added to.

Wow, sorry to here about that. It sounds like Mace and Fullaluv are right on the money. The mess is the worst part. The low oil pressure for 10 seconds might have made rods knock a little but I bet damage is unlikely. A lot of newer cars make a little rod clatter when they start up cold anyway. You did good by shutting her down quick!!! Good job!!!

20 50 is great oil for these little high reving engines. It's what I use all the time. But I'm in So. CA. where it's warmer all year.

I think your eng. will be ok. I agree that not much oil could have come out of that hole. You could probably go down that same route and see your oil on the steet and get an idea of when and where it started leaking.

haha i forgot to mention someone pulled up to me in a huge bronco and said "uhh, did you just lose an oil pump?"

haha, i told him it was my oil pressure gauge, and he said it was back in the street, he thought it was my oil pump that fell out. hahaha i laughed so hard, but then thanked him and ran and got the gauge, and thats where the whole mess started, exactly at the point where i heard it pop faintly.

and i completely changed the old oil, and there wasn't much in it, about a quart came out, maybe less than that, soo most of it HAD to of sprayed out of that hole. but i understand why you guys think that, because my dad said the same thing. but if it didn't come out of there, i have no idea where it came from, since i have no leaks anywhere.

but its running really good, although i dont like the rough start ups in the colder mornings here, its been gettin warmer though, sooo all is well i hope.

and fullaluv, the date actually went well, she ended up picking me up.

the funny thing about this incident though, is that i was about 1/4 mile from her house and it did that. haha

OHHH and btw, we really hurt my luv towing it home. :-( we used a damn CHAIN cuz thats all we had, and it was a heavy one at that, we looped it around my frame, and i told my grandpa (he came and towed me) that it was going to hurt my truck, and he just gave me this look like i was an idiot, like he was god of earth you know? lol and sure enough it bent my frame near the radiator, and took off the bumper a bit, tore my front license plate on both sides, and shattered my lime green cover over it.

just pushed the bumper back in, and you can't notice the frame unless you look at the holes in the bumper or w/e, or look down through the grill.

very depressing though, after all this hardwork, to have my grandpa in ford triton v10 yankin around my little baby. seriously forgetting i was hooked up, and im a lot smaller than he is. heh

He probably gave you an extra jerk or two because you questioned his actions. :)

the engine will be fine. if you still had oil to drain out, then there was still oil to pump. you know what i mean.

ive ran my g200 with hardly any oil pressure, and it never had any problems afterward. the engine still ran pretty good when i tore it apart too. there was just a fair amount of metal in the oil.
