I HAD MY CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER GO OUT AND FIXED IT WITH A NEW ONE. I THEN CHANGED OUT MY OIL PAN GASKET, INSTEAD OF REMOVING THE CENTER LINK I CHOSE TO LOOSEN THE MOTOR MOUNT AND JACK THE MOTOR TWO INCHES TO REMOVE THE PAN. NOW THE CLUTC WORKS AND THE OIL PAN IS FREE OF LEAKS. BEFORE ALL OF THIS THE TRUCK STARTED AND RAN FINE. NOW WHEN I START IT IT RUNS FOR 30 TO 40 SECONDS AND DIES. I CHANGED THE COIL BUT NOT THE RESISTOR, I CHANGED THE FUEL FILTER AND CHECKED THE PUMP. ANY SUJESTIONS?

Sounds like you might have crimped or twisted a fuel line or a dead fuel pump. Have you tried opening the gas cap, disconnecting the the fuel at the input to the carb (and putting it in a jug) and then starting the truck? It almost sounds like you've got some fuel in the bowl but not enough flow or fuel pressure to keep it running. I think the '76 had an electric fuel pump, so this would be an easy check. The fuel system is non-vented, so it may just be running/starting on pressurized fuel vapors.

Lot's of good advice here, but that's my .02 cents. Good luck, let us know what you discover.

Yes I have checked the pump and its pumping. It has a new fuel filter and the lines are clear.

When I first started it up after installing my clutch master cylinder it sounded like a vacuum hose or gasket popped then it died. Do you think it may be a vacuum problem in the intake manifold? The reason why I think this is because I have an oil leak on the manifold?

Thanks for the advice.

Upon starting Luv, one pump on peddle and it starts. The idle is somewhat rough. After about 30 seconds the engine surgesor the idle increases and then it splutters and dies. It will start right back up but continues to do the same.

If I pat the peddle giving more gas, it dies.

I checked out everything in first reply and results were okay.

Easy to check for fuel. Look at the sight glass on the carb front. Half way across the window is normal level. If you have the stock carb, that is.
Which filter did your change? There is another one inside the pump. Little known about.

Sounds to me like the fuel pump relay isn't clicking on when the motor is running for some reason. The relays do go bad, but my experience is that it usually has something to do with an electrical gremlin somewhere else.

The fuel pump is kind of tricky to test. You need to make sure it comes on when you crank the motor over, and that it stays on once the motor is running. The alternator and voltage regulator drive a relay that keeps the fuel pump running. You'll get enough fuel in the carb to run about 30 seconds at idle just from cranking the motor over (pump running while key at start) so make sure that thing actually stays running once the motor starts.

800xl is correct. If the alternator is not charging the fuel pump stops.

yes i just fixed my luv after 4 months i changed the cap/rotor/plugs/wires and it still did not run more than 30 seconds and the wire that ran the fuel pump was not staying on so i ran a new one and moved the fuel pump under the hood and zoom zoom i am driving my luv again so maybe use a test light to see if it stays on after starting ok hope it helps

no clue if this would relate at all.

but since you jacked the motor up, maybe your timing is off now? or possibly skipped time.

i have no idea if that would happen, but if it dies after 30 seconds, and you said it idles really rough.. could be timing, from the experiences i've had on my 79.

just a thought tho. let me know if im wrong. heh

Yeah I wouldn't rule anything out. But test the fuel pump for both power with the key at start and power with the motor running and key at on. That will at least eliminate pump power as your issue. Then you could look at flow and pressure. It don't take much flow to get it to idle forever, so dying at 30 seconds would barely put a trickle in a jar if you unhooked the line at the carb and ran the pump (or start the truck) to test it.

LOL...Mind if I barge in?

My old 78 did the same thing and it drove me nearly crazy for a few days. I finally figured out that my electrical connections at the fuse box were severely corroded, plus I had a couple of bad grounds, so the fuel pump relay just wasn't getting enough juice to run the fuel pump.

Like 800xl said...it's probably an electrical gremlin. So if you don't have a ground strap between your engine and body...I highly recommend that you pick one up at the nearest parts store and install it, because that helps a lot.

Then I would start by cleaning up all of your grounds, then remove your fuse box from the fender well (disconnect the battery first...duh)and seriously clean all of it's connections. Luvs are notorious for having random shorts from corroded connections there.

You are probably going to utter a few cuss words when you start checking your wiring out...because I have yet to see a Luv that didn't have some "creative electrical customization" hidden somewhere in the wiring...lol

After that, go through all of your electrical connectors one by one and clean those too...and then hook your battery back up and see what happens.

Good luck and happy hunting!
