Does anyone know how much u can machine the head on the 1.8? I have heard that it improves power.

It just so happens that I just got off the phone with a diesel mechanic in my family, and I asked a similar question. He told me that you don't want to resurface the head unless it is necessary due to warping. He said that the main reason behind this is that it will change the specs of your camshaft movement in a way that is less than desirable if you take off too much. So, the way that I understand it is that if there's no warping don't risk shaving. If you want to know how to determine if it needs machining, let me know and I will post it.

Hope this helps (I know it is probably not what you wanted to hear, but...)

I have heard of a couple of places locally that are straightening warped aluminium heads by heating and pressing rather than just machining. If you've got a warped head try looking around for someplace that is capable of doing something more than just cutting metal off. If it is warped bad enough the cam will start to bind up and wear things out a lot faster even if the bearings are redone. Not to mention shaving will increase pressure on the head gasket, which is already a weak link on the LUV 1.8L.

also remember that the 1.8 is a zero clearance engine....meaning..at stock...it you break the timing chain, or it jumps a few teeth (like mine did  ) ...it WILL bend valves!!
if you remove too much from the head you run an even bigger rick of bending valves

Larp, do the pistons have valve reliefs in a stock engine?

I used to have shaved head on my 75 4banger and when my chain snapped it didn't bend anything, mine still had clearance

jackshaft ? hmmm...never heard that one, though mine does have a layshaft (Haynes manual term). I assume they are the same thing. If i remember correctly they changed the head design the next year(76) after mine, that could be the reason for bent valves.
