After painting my sons GMC Jimmy I have decided it's time to probably upgrade from my 30 year old Binks 7 and get a new paint gun. Definitely HVLP gravity feed but I have never used one. I will appreciate any shared knowledge and experiences from anyone who has used any of these.

Out here we use a new system, the waterbase stuff with special guns and air blowers.

Thanks for the comments guys. MytMouz, I understand that completely and that is why I have stuck with my Binks all this time. It still shoots great but everyone I talk with tells me if I try one of the HVLP gravity fed guns I will love it. I have at least two more projects coming up soon and now just might be the time to cut my teeth.

I would imagine it shoots the Enamels and Poly's with no problems.?.? Can you get different tips for it?

Luvrv8, I was looking at some Laquer paint at the Du-Pont store and he told me it probably won't be here much longer. He then mentioned you guys in Cali and said it was ilegal for him to even send Laquer products there. He told me about the water based stuff an said it seemed to be good paint. I just don't know anyone up here shooting it.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Yep, I shoot pretty much base coat/clear coat. It came with 4 tips, here is the one I have. (and I now see they have came down in price as I payed a lot more than that 8 years ago. )

I actually like the waterbase stuff. The prep work takes more time, you must do the final sand at 800 grit. After each coat you have to use a air atomizer gun to dry the paint, after 3 coats then wait 45 min for the clear and if done correctly it looks like glass. I painted the hood (cowling) of my Airplane, flew it several times in the rain at 130 MPH and not one flaw.

Thanks for the info about the gun Tilted. I really appreciate it.

Luvrv8, that does sound like a little more work but that is what the paint guy said; he said it actually holds up as well if not better than some other products. I'm sure we will all be using it eventually.

Remember Cali has strict EPA laws. They have no choice. I have heard from several people stuck in Cali that the water based stuff is not too bad, you just have to learn to use it.

Grandmaster of the "Shade Tree" way.. I can't see the yard for all the cars. Come on down and we will sit on the porch and watch the grass grow.

Just remember you get what you pay for! When I painted at Daktronics they had Valspar bring in their water based stuff..about 97..it sucked. But the new stuff is a lot better. Persona;;y I like acrylic urethane...never sprayed clear.
