I've been looking online trying to match the stock yellow paint on a 78. Would any of you know what the color code is? If not would my best bet be to bring a trim panel to paint mixer?

I like Du-Pont. I have used their PPG brand several times and even though it's a cheaper brand I haven't had any problems with it. I have used Ditzler, Sherwin Williams also. Orielly's also has their own brand of paint and though I have never used it I plan to try it on my '81 after hunting season is over. Prep work is the key to a good paint job.

It is best if you use the same brand on primer and/or what ever you need. Not all of them are compatible. Wherever you buy it should have someone who knows about paint.

papaG is right. In the past Du-Pont was all to itself. If you used Dupont primer, sealer or just about any other Dupont product you had to use Dupont paint. I remember Acme, Martin Senior, Ditzler and Sherwin Williams could be painted over each others primers and sealers and such. It's still best to use all one brand when you can. I have used PPG on my last few and it has worked fine.

LOL...

And I agree...use all of the same brand if you don't want to end up with a potential problem. PPG is good stuff, and when you think you've done enough prep work...sleep on it and check it again. You only want to paint it once. And you want to end up with something that will last a long time and that you can be proud of.

And just for the record...Rustoleum makes primer too.

I want the new paint to have a weathered look. Should I use a single stage? What would look most like the finish of a well maintained paint job from the 70s

Acrylic Laquer if you can still get it....no clear coat. It will look flat and if you want to do something with it later you can wet sand it with about 600 grit paper, buff and wax it. Carquest sells a flat industrial paint that sprays fairly well but I think it only comes in two colors, forest green and one other but I forget what it is.

Some areas you can only get the water based paint, no solvents, like all paints used to have. California is one state that sells WB paint now. Most if not all car makers have gone to WB paints. What does that mean, you can not get paint in all types and color depending on where you live.

Tractor Supply has some industrial paints and tractor paint. My small trailer is John Deere Green and it is over 10 years old. I do need to repaint again due to use. 2 part BC/CC the Base coat has little if no shine to it. If you are looking for the weathered look where you see a little red primer showing through, sand paper, sanding the color coat down will do it. I have seen some very convincing paint done that way. Sand the top coat should dull most any paint. BC/CC can look like crap like that. Single stage is really the way to go.

If you are looking for the flat black, chalk board paint was a option, yes real chalk board. There are real automotive paint companies that make a flat black now. John Deere black engine paint is a flat paint. If I remember right, someone makes something to dull paint that you mix into your paint when you spray it.. I don't remember who now.

OK...lol...laugh if you all feel the need to - but back when I painted my truck, I too wanted an old paint lower gloss kinda finish. And I wanted to do it cheap and a bit easier than guys on here that have done the Rustoleum roller paint jobs - but still wanted it to look good and last. So after looking around at various paints, I grabbed a paint gun at Harbor freight, a gallon of Rustoleum's best primer, a gallon of their blue, a gallon of their white, and a gallon of their silver.

BTW....Rustoleum's silver is a semi-gloss, so mixing it with two other high gloss paints gave the exact finish I wanted, so IMHO that mixture will work (2 parts high gloss to 1 part semi-gloss) for any plain color combination.

After doing all of my prep work, I used the best quality thinner the store where I bought my paint had to thin it while giving it a good coat of primer, and then I mixed equal parts of blue, silver, and white, strained it well, and spent the next 3 days in the hot as hell sun painting, finish sanding, and buffing out my truck.

This is how it looked when I was done and still does today:

So there is another option for everyone. And I know...it aint a show quality high $$ paint job - but I still get compliments all the time on my truck. Plus the paint job is still holding up just fine - rain or shine. And trust me - where I live in Washington - my truck is driven daily and always parked outside in some pretty lousy weather.
