Thanks alot guys. :D

It's time to talk about engines. I originally intended to just use a good 'ol 20 or 22r toyota motor and it would be fine. Except that it would be just like every other toyota out there  . You have to plan your passes a half mile ahead of time; Downshifting to climb hills; then add a/c into the mix 8O . No, that just isn't going to cut it. There are lots of swaps that can be done to a Toyota and lots of adapters and things made by various companies. What engine will be going into this truck you ask?? :?

Stay Tuned.....

my dad has a 82 toyota that has a buick 225 v6 in it. i guess the guy that put the motor in they truck used a kit that had motor mounts, a tranny mount and a transfercase adapter. now when a toyota body is used there is no modifacations to the firewall. i dont know about the luv body on there. its looks like the mounts for the body have bodylifted the truck, so i dont think youll have any problems with clearances.

The 20 and 22r engines have around 100 HP and the EFI 22re has around 115 or so. In order to make this truck fun to drive through hills or flatland, with or without a/c running, we're going to need about double that. Here is a picure of my new engine stand

Image

This is a 1983 Toyota

Image

That has been kind enough to agree to donate it's engine, harness, computer, bellhousing, radiator, a/c parts, cruise control, and other stuff to the truck build.

Image

It has the Toyota 5MGE engine which is a DOHC inline 6 EFI producing about 150-160 HP in stock form. I'm not sure of the torque rating but with the DOHC's it runs nice! I'm going to remove all smog junk, add a cold air intake, free flowing exhaust and header and possibly some cams. That should put the numbers real close to 200. :smt023 . I've researched the swap and it is fairly common in toyota truck circles. It's not going to be easy to fit in the Luv engine compartment which is slightly shorter than the Toy truck bay but it can and will be done  You are probably wondering what trans, t-case etc. ...I will provide all the details of the swap as I go.

shouldnt that supra motor bolt right up to the exsisting 4x4 toyota tranny. im pretty sure it should. ive seen other 2jz swaps into like toyota PUs and 4runners and they just bolt the motor right up to the exsisting tranny and off they go.

anyways, that gonna be really trick when you get it done.

I don't think the stock toyota trans would handle the supra engine's power, but then of course i'm just going off of info i'v gotten from others, but then again they had turbo setups and not N/A, so i could be wrong about the stock tranny handling the power.

Things have been going pretty slow but I managed to get a few things done in the past few weeks.

First of all, The Supra motor is out. The Luv engine compartment is shorter than a Toyota truck and I just wont be able to fit it in there without recessing the firewall and I am not going to do that. I've decided to go with a Toyota 4 cylinder truck motor and just put some power upgrades on it.

I found a near perfect set of stepside fenders for it.

:smt023

There is only one minor cracked area on one step but it's not a through-break ...a super easy fix and none of the edges have been broken or repaired. Amazing

A pretty nice Mikado steering wheel

Image

And I've cleaned up and painted the engine compartment with Hammered finish paint. never mind the color...the body color (unknown at this time) will go over the top of it.

More to come...

i know tis is kinda off topic, but would that supra motor fit in a older toyota pickup? ive always wanted to get like a 81-83 toyota 2wd pickup and put a tricked out motor in it. ive seen the buick swap done alot, but i wanna see a supra motor in a 2wd pickup.

Yep. It's been done quite a bit. Check out Supracharged.com for more info

very cool project! i'd highly recommend the crossover steering setup, i've got it on my '79 toy and it makes things less scary on-road, and performs better off-road.

to bolt that supra engine up you're gonna need a tranny from a '84-95 4cyl toyota, and the supra bellhousing. only thing there is that you're gonna have to relocate the crossmember and resize the drivelines, as the later tranny is 4" longer than the '79-83 box.

oh yeah, and my 20R/22R hybrid doesn't require any downshifting on hills. power on demand, baby

I was looking through old posts and saw this one. I was wondering where this truck is now. Is it finished? Was it set aside? Just curious.

I guess no one knows about this truck. I would really like to know how it turned out.
