Header and bigger exhaust pipe (2 inch to 2 1/4) would help. Weber carb will help some more. You could get a camshaft regrind, I think Deltacams has something for the 1.8L.

A good tune up (plugs, points, cap and rotor at a minimum) will help if it hasn't been done in a while. Changing the fluids can also be a help, tho barely noticable. (Engine oil, trans oil, axle lube)

You could upgrade to electronic ignition also, that would help not only power but just in general.

Brand new kit with every thing will run ya about $350 or so, they do have them on Ebay every now and then for a good price.

I like the idea of the Weber. It does take alot of guessing out of the pile when you have a carb that don't get gunked up with crap and puts more air into the chamber.

Your 79 won't pass smog in Ca. with a custom carb on it.
You could do the exhaust stuff as long as you leave the cat in there.
