that depends though, according to my manual the autos had 4.10, but there where no auto 4x4s made in '80, so that means you have 4.56

As far as I know, all 4x4s had 4.10

You can check it as follows (This works best with a friend to help):
Put the truck in nuetral and jack up 1 wheel. Spin the wheel 20 times while watching the driveshaft. If the driveshaft spins 41 times, it's a 4.10 If the driveshaft spins 45.6 times, it's a 4.56 Basically, dividing the driveshaft spins by 10 gives the ratio. This will work on any open differential.

I'm sorry to say but i think your wrong, according to both of my manuals the 4x4's have 4.56's, that and i have also checked this because if you look at isuzu's later products(Trooper) you will find that most of them had 4.56(they where all 4x4 so that dosen't matter) the exceptions are thoose that had the wide tire package(4.77) and the autos(4.10, and or 4.30), and further more I have personally tested my truck which happends to be a '80 4x4, and it has 4.56 gears so i'm sorry to say but i believe your wrong.

My 79 factory shop manual says the front diff has 4.10 gears only while the rear can have 4.10 or some other ratio (can't recall off the top of my head) I haven't tested any of my trucks but I'd go with the factory manual instead a haynes or Chiltons book.

Just an FYI, my series 5 factory shop book has yet another ratio listed. I believe through the years several ratios were used, something to keep in mind when looking for a replacement. Especially if you have a 4x4, things break quick when the front and rear ratio don't match and you lock those hubs in. :wink: That might also explain an 80 with 4.56 gears in it too. They did change several things for 1980 including a minor trans change and a larger clutch on the 4x models so a different ratio wouldn't be a shocker.

i think my info is crediable, I got the same ratio for the 4x4 from my series 10 shop manual and the haynes manual too, so I'm going to lean to the fact that '80 4x4s have 4.56 gearing front and back.

This sounds like a good reason for me to complete my factory shop manual collection. I've got a series 5 and a series 9, so that only leaves about 9 more. :)

I just double-checked my 79 4x4, using the procedure above, and it's 4.10. Of course, that's a sample of 1.

I've got an 80 and 3 79s, next time I have a rear wheel off the ground on any of them I'll do a check. My 80 has a lot of mismatched parts though, so I'm not going to trust that it will represent all 80 trucks.

I suppose I should check the 76s I have and the 77s too, I have one 77 rear that came in an auto tranny truck.

I have an 80 4x4 with factory AC, when replacing the bearings in the rear end the ring and pinion teeth count revealed a 4:10 ratio.

Ok guys old school trick.

Jack up one side of the rearend off the ground. Put a mark on a rear tire and have someone watch the tire. Mark the drive shaft too. Turn the drive shaft and count the number of rotations of the drive shaft to make on full roataion of the tire.

A little over 4 turns would = 4.10
A little over 4 1/2 turns would = 4.56
3 3/4 turns = 3.73

and so forth.

When one wheel's stopped, the other wheel turns twice as fast. Therefore, for 1 wheel rotation, a 4.10 would give you 2.05 driveshaft rotations, not 4.1.
For a 4.10:
1xWheel = 2.05xDriveshaft
2xWheel = 4.10xDriveshaft
20xWheel = 41xDriveshaft
Which fits the procedure I described above. Note that I used 20 rotations because it's sometimes hard to distinguish partial rotations. Using the procedure I described above, for 20 wheel rotations:
3.73 = 37.3 Driveshaft rotations
4.10 = 41 Driveshaft rotations
4.56 = 45.6 Driveshaft rotations

Well this thread got me thinking so I went out and did the old spin the wheel game. 81 4x4 Man

Mine was not a 4.10 or a 4.56 mine is 5.2X it was slightly more than 52 turns on the shaft. Now I know that some custom work was done on this truck a farmer used it to pull stuff around his farm. So maybe he changed it. The thing is where did he find the parts?

I always new something was fishy when the truck top speed and I mean top is 62 MPH

Funny $hit

I dunno. Maybe it's not a Luv differential. A picture would be really cool. Maybe someone could identify it.
