what is the width on a s10 rearend, and will it handle a 406 with about a 150 plate system with a spool in it?

There are several posts that are on here that cover the s10 rear ends....use the search button.

I wouldn't get to crazy with the motor if I was running an s10 rear.
Just spend your money once and get a 9" Ford and narrow it.
It will handle anything that you can throw at it.

NO it WILL NOT hold up!!! I had one in my truck and took it to the local track for some fun and broke a axle on the very first pass. With the C-clip design of the Chevy there is nothing to hold the axle in to the housing.I do not have a ground stomping big block in my truck I am building a driver and since the SB400 has a bunch of tourqe and then add the nitrous I feel it would be trouble just waiting to show up.
After my little trip to the strip i came home just glad that I was there early, running a solo run and no one got hurt.I feel lucky because I ended up in the wrong lane pointing back at the christmas tree with the axle and wheel rolling past me .However you may not be this lucky.
I have put a 9" in my truck and also added a 100-175 hp nitrous because at least my axles won't be flying out when I can get back to the strip.
If you do use it at least buy C-clip eliminators but in my opinion any money spent on a S-10 rearend would be money spent twice because you will probably end up with a broken rearend and going to a 9"anyway!

A 2WD S-10 rearend is 48" backing plate to backing plate. A 4WD S-10 is 52" wide.

There's 2 different ring gear sizes for the S-10. '91 and up use basically the same rearend as an 80's Camaro or Firebird but S-10's are narrower. '90 and down are a smaller ring gear and weaker yet.

I have a V8 S-10 Blazer with a stock non-posi rear. It's powered by a 375HP/327 with a close ratio Muncie 4 speed and a 12" clutch. I have 9" wide rear rims wth 325/50/15 Goodrich TA tires. I've sidestepped the clutch at 6000 RPM a few times and amazingly it's still together. 8O 8O

I do already have a narrow Dana to install in it, as I don't trust that puney little thing in there now.

I'd listen to RATNLUV about the Chevy C-clip thing. It's not pretty when you see your axle and tire pass you, cuz you know in about 2 seconds you're going to be in for one hairy ass ride.

Go for the Ford 9". Then you'll only have to install it once.

I learned about the c-clip style rear ends a long time ago.
A buddy that had a faaaaaast monza had holes all in his quarter panel from the axle breaking, coming out then stabbing in the Q panel......
he just kept putting axles back in and breaking them.....doesn't show how smart he was, but that car was fast.

I looked at a 68-72? Bronco rear for my S-10 and if I remember right it was 50" or 51" backing plate to backing plate. About 2" or 3" wider than a 2WD S-10. The guy wanted $250, it had 3.50 gears and broken short-side axle. Was probably still a good deal, but wider than I wanted

I don't know what width the stock Luv is, but aren't they the same as S-10? Guess I could measure my Luv

I WAS AT THE BONE YARD THE OTHER DAY AND MEASURED A 4X4 LUV REAR END AND THE LENGTH WAS RIGHT AT 47.5" BACKING PLATE TO BACKING PLATE.

I HOPE THIS HELPS.

Post subject: s-10 diff for LUV
PostPosted: Wed Feb 19, 2003 12:45 am
I use to run a S-10 for quite a while. I put a Auburn Pro diff. and Richmond gears. C-clip eleminators should be used, I think that atleast 4-500 hp would be ok. Maby a Summit billet diff cover with the preload bolts would help.
