I read on one of the earlier threads someone was gonna try this. Did this work? Will I need the Trooper slip yokes? etc. etc.

This website rules! :D

Zane I believe did end up with a 5spd in his LUV, but I could not find a lot of details on a search.

From what I have learned, you want a Trooper 86-mid87 (with the carbed 2.3L motor) tranny. You need the trooper front driveline, and you will have to get the luv rear driveline shortened. An later 87 or 88 and up 5 spd might work, but there are differences in the clutch setup that might be a pain, and I'm not certain the bellhousing pattern is exactly the same.

I don't think 84-85 troops had the 5spd, but you also might find the same tranny in an Isuzu PUP pickup. Don't go for a diesel, the trans is different yet again on them. An 86 troop would give up some other nice swap parts like power steering and 4.56 gears for the front and rear so a complete donor rig would be the way to get the parts.

I'll post the link here. The tranny I picked up was out of a 85 trooper I think. The post has the vin info on there. The clutch wasnt a problem, although, the crossmember where the e-brake mounts needs to be cut.
My mechanic made a E-brake bracket that bolted to the tranny. He also welded mounts on the frame so the trooper removable crossmember could be used.
As far as difference between trooper and luv tranny, the bellhousing is the same, the trooper is a few inches longer than the luv. A new hole for the 4wd shifter will need to be made. Oh besides the tranny and crossmember, make sure you pick up the 4wd driveline to the front axl.
The stuck luv 4x4 will be too short. :D

I have not checked out years, but I'd start looking at Isuzu PUPs or pickups with the 1.9L or 2.3L motor. They put 2.3s in up to about 1993 I believe. If you could find one, the Impulse (Turbo and non) should have a very similar trans as well. I also have a guess that an Impulse trans might have a shorter throw on the shifter which could be a nice touch.

When I don't have to be up at 5AM to go try to be a finish carpenter I'll post the gear ratios listed in my 86 Trooper factory service manual if that helps. I think 1st and 2nd might be a tad different than the LUV 4spd.

I just checked and the 79 LUV 4x4 and 86 Trooper trans ratios are identical except for reverse. The LUV has 3.83 for rev, and the troop has 3.72. Even the t-case ratio is the same. So other than having the 0.85 ratio 5th gear the Trooper 5spd would perform pretty much the same.

Oh yeah, the speedo gear is 6/19 for the trooper, 6/20 for the LUV. The difference might just make up some for larger tires on a LUV and get the speedo reading closer to correct.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering about dialing in the speedo cuz my Luv has bigger tires on it.

The Trooper also has 4.56 gears in the diffs which change the speedo equation a bit. The stock tire size for an 86 trooper is 225/75R-15. If someone wanted to exercise their math skills that should be enough info to figure out what to change the speedo gear to. (that and the stock LUV tire size 195/75R14 IIRC) I think there are a few different speedo gears available that would fit the trans, the one on the 83 PUP I used to have was an 18 tooth I believe, which is probably just about right for a tire around 29-30inch or so. Finding those speedo gears might require digging through a lot of junkyards though.

I found a good tire size calculator online at http://www.powerdog.com/tiresize.cgi for figuring the change in circumference or tire revs/mile between stock and larger tires. That might help too.
