So, I just picked up a 1980 4X4 Luv, and I want to swap the engine for the G200, or the 4ZD1, but I'm not sure which I can squeeze more power out of. I'm not looking to make it a monster, just top off a stock engine, plus, I have both of these engines laying around. I found a few ways of giving the G200 a little extra, but I haven't found hardly anything about the 4ZD1... Suggestions?

why not a fuel injected 4ZE1?? trooper 2.6L you can take the 4x4 5 speed tranny too!

I'm not familiar with the 4ZD1. I know the G200 will bolt right in to the motor mounts and the the trans. Are you looking to do a lot of welding or do you want a bolt in?

Because I have the 4ZD1 already, and I want to keep it cheap as I can. I wish I could, but I used my rent money for the truck! :econfused

I don't mind doing some motor mount welding, or that kind of thing. All the research I've done points to the 4ZD1 bolting up to the transmission ok, unless it's the turbo model. As for the motor mounts, I expect some welding there...

The 2.3L will bolt to your tranny, uses the same clutch. Motor mounts will probably need modified & the firewall to clear the distributor. You probably need a bigger radiator, the 2.3 fan is offset so a stock fan shroud won't work. You need all the 2.3 accessories & brackets. You may need the 4x4 oil pan to clear the front diffy.
A 1.9L is a direct bolt in swap, everything that fits the stock 1.8 will fit.
1.9 is 82 hp/101 torque, 2.3 is 96/123, factory ratings.

I had to use the 1.8 flywheel on the 2.3 so it would fit the the trans.

Smokey- how? 1.8/1.9 flywheels have 6 bolts, 2.3/2.6's have 8.
2.3's came with the same cable clutch MSG tranny/bellhousing as the earlier engines, so the flywheels fit. The 2.6 flywheels won't.
Clutches for 4wd 1.8, all 1.9 and 2.3 are the same, 2wd 1.8's used a different clutch.

may i ask the diff between the 2wd and 4wd clutch/flywheel?? (for 1.8)
when i bought my luv i picked up an extra motor. and the clutch was a larger diameter in one than the other..i used the larger clutch with its flywheel because it was less warn.. but why the difference

When the 4x4 was introduced in 1979 the clutch size was inceased from 8" to 8.5" (and I suppose the flywheel contact surface also increased) but only in the 1.8L 4x4. This same larger cable opereated clutch was retained as the engine size was increased to 1.9L, then 2.3L, both 2wd & 4wd, until the 4ZE1 2.6L came out with a different tranny with an even bigger 9" hydraulic clutch. Bigger clutch, more holding power. A 1.8L 8" clutch is very easy to slip.
