 Post subject: The Terror Begins
PostPosted: Sun Aug 10, 2003 12:34 am
Hey all you LUVers out there. As of August 9, the Terror has begun in Eastern Oregon. My 78 Chevy LUV is going in for extremely major surgery. Purchased with a 78 Toyota 20R motor, I decided that was not enough for such a street machine. I sold my VW and went out and bought a 80 Caprice that was the home of a "wicked" 350. Along with the 350 I will be installing a 4 spd tranny, 9 inch rear end, completely customized suspension ( thanks to my friends who are going to help me out), power windows, racing seats and acc..... As for the body, I am looking to convert it to a convertible and am drawing up plans to cut out the back of the cab and front of the bed to turn it into one piece (keeping the look of the LUV) by using the convertible top and a home made bed cover, and custom made rubber seal from bed to cab to make the ultimate cruizer with a "wicked" stereo. The color of the truck will be "grabber green" type of color. If you wish to see what color that is, go to your local Schucks and look at their paint section and look for the ugliest, brightest green they have. 8O I will keep you posted as I go along in my project....And they thought my Jetta was bad...

Where in Eastern Oregon are you? I live in Grants Pass, over in the south-western part of Oregon. I am building a 73 2wd with a pretty healthy 350.

Another idea may be to put a turbocharged Toyota 22R. A company called LC Engineering makes just about everything for those motors. They even have 300 hp all motor crate engines. Check out http://www.lcengineering.com

Pics will be coming later, no scanner right now. Just went out and got a new shifter, chrome kit, Edelbrock intake manifold, replaced the Q-Jet with a new 650cfm Edelbrock, and a whole buncha other stuff including a new amp for the system I have for it. Decided to keep the 350 turbo though, the tranny kinda went kaput in my friends garage when his dad hit it with his ford POS. Oh well. I am in Huntington Oregon, right on the border with Idaho. Oh.... and I was thinking about turnin it to a conv. any ideas where I could get plans??? Thanks people

probably the best place to look is old old old back issue of Mini-truckin. Back during the first BIG mini truck boom - mid 80's-early 90's tons of companies offered convertable kits...I remember reading a few tech articles on how do your own convertable.....

Might even look at AIM, they still advertise in mini truckin some of the old stuff that was popular back then.

Sorry it took me so long to get back, but as for the truck, she is one fast  . I just had the custom "corvette" style exhaust built and mounted. The 350 has PATRIOT tight truck headers going back to 30" glass' and being dished out behind the rear tires. EDELBROCK performer rpm intake, EDELBROCK 600cfb 4bbl, 3" riser, and EDELBROCK chrome air cleaner sitting on top with chrome valve covers and breather. B&M super sport shifter, and JAZ 16gal fuel cell add a lil spice to how she looks. As far as the rear end goes, the 12 bolt out of the donar (1980 Caprice) will soon be shortened and mounted, but for now the power is put to the wheels (15") through the unbelievably reliable Toyota rear end. Plans for my next pay check include body work and new paint, tinted windows (15%), and a tow setup so I can take my new 1971 custom semi v-hull jet boat with me the next time I go to the drags. The boat has a custom built ford 8O yes ford 360 big block (she is bright yellow with extremely deep purple flames). Special thanks to my boss and the maint. crew at Farewell Bend Travel Plaza in Huntington Oregon for the use of tools, and their shop to build this truck and thanks to those LUVers out there who helped me on my way. Watch for me at the races. Peace. 8)

If your gonna turbo your luv, find a junk toyota supra turbo motor and tranny. they are the best thing to put in small trucks.

And they are pretty much bullet-proof. Stock bottem end is good for about 500 hp.

I havent really had much luck with the toyota supra turbos, we got my friends goin, but it just kept ....ing up. I am gonna try to find a 5 spd for the 350 cuz the the auto doesnt fit my "personality" and I dont like autos as much as I do 5 spds. Since I hadda take it out for the space if you need the heater and a/c junk, just let me know, its up in the shop and if its not taken by the time ya inquire, its free, you pay shipping. I also have some vw and toyota parts that I need to get rid of so I can clear a space in my garage for my boat and new sand rail.

I will go through the parts now that my friends took what they wanted. I will try to get the heater and ac parts before they go into my friends Belair, another project of ours, completely custom interior so needed something relatively small... And I'll try to get the tranny, but I'm not sure if its a 4 or 5 spd. I will get back with the list of parts on friday when I get back home. I gotta go shopping for a new rear end, kinda trashed it pretty good when I was driving the LUVn350 to work on Sunday :( Oh, and if anyone needs body parts for a Chevy Caprice, let me know, I have spares from my 1980.
