AWD is better than 4WD for on road driving.
for off-road driving 4WD with lockers is better than AWD.
we had a 98 dodge grand caravan ES with AWD, for as long as it was "on-road" it was unstopable. went any where, even on ice with studed tires.
was in the rain one time, it started jurking like the AWD was going nuts. the road was coverd in diesel from a leaking truck tank, it saved us from going in the dich. the old ads of subarus saying transfurs the power from the wheels that slip to the ones that grip is very very true

it was transfering power from wheel to wheel or frunt to rear. when we where on the diesel and it was going nuts trying to find grip.
under stand though it will not help you stop at all. only if you give it power will it straten a rig up and help keep you on the road.
(edit) oh theres a major computer controling the AWD so that needs to be swaped
