Ok guys, I have hear of it being done, but i have searched up and down on these forums to no avail. Has anyone used an izuzu impulse
head/turbo/fuel injection system on a L.U.V.?
I have found a parts izuzu that has had its rear end wrecked.
Some info would be nice, i want to atleast try .....

Seems like it would be easier to swap the whole motor out...
Also seems like a certain fuzzy purple dude was going to try a swap like this awhile ago... 8)

I voted "Maybe?" not sure if that stuff would be a direct swap to the g180...

I'd have to vote sorta. The head is not compatible from the 2.0L Impulse turbo motor. (aka 4ZC1) All of the 4Z series motors are set up for a timing belt rather than a timing chain like the G180/G200. A complete swap would be the way to go for optimal gain, but the intake/exhaust should bolt to a LUV motor with little or minor mods.

For the ultimate Isuzu motor, you could find a 4ZE1 and graft the 4ZC1 turbo gear to it. For more info there, check out http://www.isuzuperformance.com/isupage ... ap2.6.html
That should get you started drooling at the posibilities. Anything up to the 2.6L should be able to bolt to a LUV trans, though you might want to find a 5Spd built for a 2.6L just for a little added insurance on it holding together. (Plus you get overdrive 5th, a big fuel mileage boost)

Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention. Turbo impulses have a limited slip rear differential. If nothing else try to get the third member out of it, as that would bolt right into a LUV rear. Hopefully that rear end damage didn't get in that far, but I'd guess its ok as you could snap both axles and still have a good diff left behind.

The whole reason I want the engine swap is too have more power with my four wheel drive, I can't switch to a 5 spd, (Unless there's a Izuzu Impulse 4X4 >.<)

Thanks for the Info, I'll post info and pics as "The Project" progress's

The 5Spd out of a 4x4 pickup or Trooper would bolt to a 2.6 or 2.3L motor, not to mention a LUV 1.8L. Depending on the motor you end up working with, some years work better than others, but you can get a 5Spd 4x4 tranny/transfer case. There is an old thread here that talks about it

Here's my wishlist LUV:

2.6L Isuzu with cam and header
5Spd trans from 2.6L powered 4x4 pickup/trooper

On the intake, there are two routes:

Simple- 2.3L intake and Weber 38 carb, Give it a fuel line and just go. Somewhere around 120-140HP.

Complex- Turbo impulse parts with 2.6L intake (bigger runners than 2.0L) and perhaps a slightly larger turbo than the 2.0L impulse. You'll have a mountain of wiring to get right and need a lot of random parts (fuel pump, FI computer, etc etc) but the end result should be pretty impressive. I'm guessing but 180HP wouldn't surprise me.

800XL,
Just to add a question for you, as you seem to be very knowledgeable on Isuzu parts. I read that the Turbo Impulse had rear disc brakes. I wonder if the rear axles are close enough you could swap those over onto the stock LUV rear axle?

Jon: I'll give you a call in the next couple days. Been hectic around here lately.

As for the brakes, you know I really had not thought much about it, but it is true that Impulses have rear discs, 10.5 inch discs in fact. The rear suspension is completely different, 3 link on the early models and 5 link on the Lotus designed post 85 models, but I bet a lot of stuff could be modified or swapped across. I think the Impulse has 4 lug wheels, so the rotors might have to be drilled to work, but I'd be surprised if you couldn't swap the hardware over without much other fabrication. Now if one where building a high performance 2WD, finding a way to bolt that lotus suspension package to a LUV would certainly be cool.

For a whole lot more specs on Impulses than you probably want to know, check out: http://www.isuzuperformance.com/isupage ... impjr.html

You can bolt the whole motor from an impulse sohc 2l turbo into the luv but the dizzy faces the firewall, you should have enough clearence if not just modify the firewall a bit.

The 2.6 runners are bigger and do match up the the impulses plenum if you want to do that, but to run higher boost you have to plug up that pressure release valve on the plenum.

As for the block, you standard 1.8 or 1.6 block will fit the intake and turbo exhaust manifold. BUT!!!!! you have to welsh plug up a water gallery between intake port 3 and 4, if i remeber right, 10mm welcsh plug will do that. the intercooler setup from the impulse can't be used but it's easy to make a front mount setup.

i load up some pics of how mine is going if you want an idea?

since i'm in Australia the inpulse is the piazza.

i have the 2.6l plenum and runners on a 2l block rebuilt with a mild cam and custom turbo manifold bolted to a t3.
If you use the piazza block it has water lines to the turbo and the return line for the oil and feed of oil to the turbo. if you use the 1.8 block in the luv you have to T-piece a line off the oil pressure sender (hex key on the right of the block) to the turboi then tap a return line to the sump.

hope that helps, goodluck if you go with the conversion
