Quick question how can I search my truck to see if it has a shift kit? I don't want to drive my automatic with shifting if it doesn't because that'd ruin it right? I know it's fine just in Drive but I like to get on it and it isn't a stick so I shift from 1st to D off a line.

I am not a tranny builder but you can "feel" a trans that has some work when it shifts. Does it slip when you manually shift it or is it a firm shift without slipping. When my trans builder gets through with one you can DEFINALTLY feel the difference, there is no smoothness between gears. If you are getting slippage you are eating up the clutches.

Shifting your trans manually is fine, it wont ruin it. Do you have a kick down cable connected and adjusted correctly? Is your vacuum modulator hooked up correctly and adjusted? Start with the basics, if those two items are hooked up and adjusted correctly it would really help the performance of your trans. I am having a hard time understanding your post but I think what I mentioned might help.

When in doubt leave the trans in drive and let it shift on it's own as the pressure in the trans will be where it's supposed to be at full throttle ,also you can feal the trans shift and tell if it is shifting crisp or slipping between gears. Make sure your kick down cable is hooked up and adjusted properly.

If I am reading this correctly, you want to shift the tranny manually. It won't hurt the tranny upshifting. Downshifting is bad.

OK how about more info, not knowing the condition of your trans makes things a little difficult but when in doubt pull the trans a rebuild it.If i recall correctly(getting old you know)you have a TH350. In stock condition they are not that great of a trans ,but with a little work they can be made just about bullet proof.I shift kit is a crutch that will help but the trans is setup to loose and will go away some time (been there done that). Now for the good news the clutches are the one main weak point as they are set to loose when rebuilding they need to be set a lot tighter clearances then stock,if you were running a big power motor the the sprag is next but with a V6 that is not an issue. So it boils down to this, after building allot of t-350s and living behind big blocks, get a TCI shift kit and install it,if the trans needs rebuilt later get the TCI trans kit rebuild the trans to V8 specs and with the shift kit all ready there your trans will be very solid and just about indestructible in your application.
