The engine started knocking this weekend when I went to drive the luv. I can't tell if it is the top end or the bottom end. When I listen to it from the top it sounds like the top end. When listening from the bottom sounds like from the bottom end. When I listen from the grill, it sounds like it is outside of the engine bay in front of the radiator. Sounds like its in real pain.

Haven't really taken a hard look at it yet. Haven't been able to get up the nerve.

yea....what he said. If it just started knocking, the block might be salvageable (if it is the pistons). My buddies Chevy dually diesel started knocking about a year and a half ago and now the cylander wall is ovaled. so a $500 in gaskets, pistons, and having the block bored, Just turned into a $8,000 new engine............................DON'T wait to fix it if at possible

if its a 2wd then its easy to pull the oil pan... i would pull it and inspect for problems. all you've got to do is pull the brace under then engine and drop the pan. an in frame rebuiild is pretty easy.

Not sure whether I should feel stupid, or be happy. Figured out what the problem was yesterday. My alternator was only hanging on by the adjustment bolt. Therefore it was rattling. Sounded awful. Ran a solid bolt through the bottom and all is good now.

I guess the original bolt(s) had shaken themselves loose. I don't know if any of you guys remember some of my previous posts when I was having all those electrical problems after going off-roading. Think a loose alternator might have been the culpret.
