 Post subject: pitman arm...
PostPosted: Fri Apr 02, 2004 10:56 pm
ok im trying to remove a steering box from a 72 luv. Well im at the part where i gotta get the pitman arm off the steering box. I rented a pitman arm pull and after getting the nut off the arm i placed the puller on there and started tightening in order to pull it off....welll after about 2 turns i realized it was not going ANYWHERE anytime soon. So guys, is there some kind of weird retainer on this thing that I am missing somehow? Or is it just stuck really freakin hard?

Just stuck freaking hard. When I changed the steering gear box in mine a few years ago, the old pitman arm on the good box I got from the junkyard had to be cut off with a acetylene torch.

use the puller and as you are tightening it hit the end of the puller with a bfhammer. they are just realley tight. i can do one in the rig.

good luck....and happy hammering 8)

thx guys, got it off finally. I actually put a heat torch to the pitman arm to make it expand a bit and pull off the shaft coming out of the steering box a little bit easier...

for some reason the luvs pitman arm seems harder to remove than most. i've removed mine several times and it takes a torch everytime. after breaking a pitman arm puller while using a big hammer, i don't mess with the hammer any more and go straight for the torch.
