My fuel gauge doesn't work, and well needless to say it has left me stranded a few times. Before I went through the "joy" of replacing the fuel sending unit is there a way to check and make sure the gause is even good? :x

You should be able to ground one side of it and the garage should pin out. I don't know which side though. You've got to check the wiring diagram. It's whichever side doesn't go to 12+.

EVERYONE: Please let people know what truck/year/engine you are asking about when you want help-sometimes it makes a difference.
This is info on a 1980 gas LUV, hopefully this will give you what you need.

So ground the wire that goes to the fuel tank sender. It should pin the gauge. If t doesn't, your gauge is bad. If it does, go ground the wire near to the sender. If it doesn't pin, the wire is bad, if it pins, then your sender is bad, or the sender isn't properly grounded.

Different engine than a '80 LUV, maybe the electronics are the same.

Does your temp gauge work ok? If so that will eliminate the gauge regulator as the problem. Then you are left with probably a sender ground problem most likely.

Dropping the tank isnt as bad as it would seem . Remove the sender and carefully clean it . Usually a corrosion issue . just take your time with some scotch brite and wd40 and clean it up .

If you need it, I have a good gas tank & sender listed here in Classifieds. I'm near Portland OR, but can ship it if needed. Price is negotiable.
