I would not put starting fluid in any smaller diesel engine. Some of the larger motors are OK with it, such as construction equipment. But I've seen a small squirt of starting fluid blow the head gasket on a small automotive diesel.

Make sure your glow plugs are working properly. If your having trouble, you may have one or more that aren't working.

I heard that the starting fluid distroys the engine, and they become addicted to it. My brother had a diesel rabbit and had to use starting fluid in the summer just to get it started. On both of my diesel trucks I just plug them in at night via the block warmer, I use a timer switch (the cheap kind that you would use to turn on your house lights while you are away from your house for an extended period of time) If your truck does not have a block warmer, you can pick them up for under $20 at JC whitney or most auto parts stores.
BTW did you check out the new diesel forum on the main LuvTruck page?

The block warmer is a good idea, but is there anyway that you can use a block warmer on it without actually plugging it into an outlet? Maybe an extra battery or something else? Do you know of something like that, because my truck is my work truck and I work nights.

I am a huge fan of battery warmers. They are easy to install and the added warmth gives you more cranking power. They still also have magnetic block heaters that you just slap on the oil pan (they usually fall off when driving)

also if you have a manual tranny, thin down the gear lube in the tranny. 80-90 gear lube gets real thick in the cold.
