Yes & no, not sure what you're asking.
A 2wd tranny will bolt to the engine and probably to the crossmember, but it will be 2wd only.
The 4wd trannies had a different back case half to include a t-case & may be longer than the 2wd.

can you bolt the t-case to the back of the 2wd tranny? because on my tranny out of my 4wd the t-case is just bolted to the back of the tranny

And I think the drive shaft won't match up. You would need a 2wd shaft, or have one made.

if your wanting to up-grade to a O\D trans in your 4wd gen1 LUV you have two ways of doing it with the stock engine.

a 4wd MSG 5sp sold in 86/87 ONLY
its a clone of the 4sp MSG in your 1980 LUV, with a 5"ish expansion housing for the added 5th gear.
just 1st, 2nd , 3rd are a little taller
1st in the 4sp its like 4.1 to 1.
1st in the 5sp is 3.8 to 1,

5th is a 14.5% O\D. T-case gearing is the same 1979 to 1987.

2nd way....
a MUA from a 2.6L engine sold 88/91 in troopers. one from a 2.8L V-6 trop will work, but the housing and input shaft must be changed to the type used on a 2.6L engine.
there are other years in rodeos, amigos and trucks, but i don't know what they are.
there a bigger trans and will be a tight fit possibly needing body lift.
and there HYD clutch, the O\D is about 20%

"if" you have a 2.2L diesel the MUA idea will not work since no diesel housings for that trans are in the USA

the twins, 81 pup and 81 LUV both are diesel 2.2
