Yes,it can be run without the thermostat, but it might cause overheating issues if the water is flowing through the system too fast.
Usually some sort of restriction is needed to slow down the water flow so that it has time to transfer the excess heat from the engine to the radiator.
In my race car(circle track) I use a flat washer with about a 1/2 inch hole in the center for flow restriction instead of a thermostat, but I don't have to worry about running in cold weather either.

and my thought was what about the cold weather.... we are doing a mock up with one but like i mentioned would be easier with out... but like the manufacture said if it is for resale it needs to be idiot proof ... so they cant blame us for any motor problems... his words not mine, dont want anyone thinking we are calling them idiots... any more thoughts on pros an cons... thanks guys

I vote for thermostat as well, not only does it help regulate the speed at which the coolant flows, it also helps prevent over cooling which is bad for an engine. Maybe no so much with a carb'd engine but fuel injected engines will run too rich if they aren't fully warmed up.

While most cases you can run without a thermostat, over all, you are better off with one, getting faster warm ups.

For What Its Worth....

I use one in all competition motors that I build.

all the Builders that taught me to build use thermostats.

it just seems foolish to not have one, But I will advocate that you drill two 3/32 holes in the thermostat to aid in bleeding and prevent overheating in case of failure.

Couldn't a thermostat be mounted in a sleeve of some kind and then the sleeve mounted in the upper radiator hose? Yep, I know some machine work would be needed to fabricate the sleeve, but it would allow the intake to be made without a thermostat housing.

Well Ctmandu, that is an option to avoid the thermostat housing. Even though I won't be needing one, give us some info and pics of what you came up with when you can.

Expensive, but nice! Does this help with your design/cost options?
