 Post subject: Tune Up?
PostPosted: Tue Jul 29, 2003 12:26 pm
Wondering if y'all gents could kinda run through a simple tune up for me. I've heard about them, but I don't know what is tinkered with in a tune up or how to tinker with it. Many thanks in advance

when i think of a tune up:
new plugs and wires, new dist. cap. replace or reset points, new air filter, recheck timing.

Also, if you havent already, replace your fuel filters. Normally you should have 2 on the truck. One up near the engine on the fenderwell and the other one(the one that many overlook) thats mounted between the tank and the fuel pump. You can find it by looking under the bed of the truck forward of the gas tank filler tube.

Just a quik question, anybody know why there's normally 2 fuel filters? When I found that I just took it off and changed the one by the engine. It's a pain in the butt to try and get at the one down by the fuel tank...

Drummer is right. It helps protect the fuel pump. You might want to put one back in.

Stock they only have one filter back by the tank just ahead of the fuel pump. If there is a filter under the hood somebody added it later. (Not a bad idea actually) There is a strainer screen in the fitting that hooks to the top of the carb though, and that can get clogged up as well.

The filter really does need to be inline before the pump. The stock pump is pretty sensitive to just about everything from junk going through it to just changes in gas contents. (Methanol additives they put in gas around here always seem to take mine out) Once you've changed it a couple of times you get pretty good at swapping the one back by the tank. Its not that hard to reach, especially compared to pulling the fuel pump out to replace it. ;)

Every factory Luv truck i've seen had a filter mounted on a bracket somewere on one of the inner fenderwells of the truck. My 75 had one on the drivers side fenderwell just below the fuse block.

Well I've got ten and have had two others. The only one of the bunch with a filter under the hood was an obvious spliced in job, though they did use the filter with the right number on it. I think what happens to a lot of trucks is people without a book go to swap the filter, can't find it, so they stick it just before the carb assuming there wasn't one.

The only thing I don't have many of are 75 and older trucks. Last complete running one I had around left many many years ago. Might be some of those, especially the older ones (never have had older than a 75) might have a little different set up for the filter. That must be the explanation for our difference of opinion. I have almost all 76 and newer trucks, and have never seen a factory bracket for a filter anywhere forward of the fuel pump. I worked on one of those old 75 motors once and decided that was enough for me, never touch the stuff since. ;) Besides, that skinny little bumper and curb catcher valance look pretty silly to me. :P
