I just rebuilt my 77 luv and it runs great there's 200 miles on it and I haven't gotten it smoged yet but I'm only getting 15 miles a gallon and I thought it would get better so I'm wondering how i can get better gas mileage without putting in a 5 speed or a new carb or new whatever and I have used the search and have not gotten my answer but I have been told its not broken in and it will get better and I was also told I gotta get it smoged so the guy can tune it to where it needs to be so any input would be great. And I would like to keep it as stock as posible.. Thanks

If it's only 15 than something might be wrong or you might be driving faster than 55mph for most of the time. 15 is the mileage your going to be getting at like 65 or 70 mph. since it's not a 4x4 your rear differential should be 3.73. And your stock tire size is like 25 or 26 inches. The smog won't make a huge difference but you should be at least 20mpg. When I took my smog stuff off I lost 2-3mpg. But I got that back with overinflated tires. The stock carb is kinda worthless but if it's in good shape there isn't much else it could be. Brakes could be dragging, a non-vented gas cap, underinflated tires, air filter, fuel filter, bad timing. Just start going through each one and I'm sure you'll find it. It also would be a good idea to go through your vacuum diagram and make sure you don't have any leaks there. They don't get the best mileage but they're cheap to maintain and they don't break often. Anything else just let us know.

Cat means stuck closed, or partly closed. This would restrict the air going in and make it run rich.... using more gas.

Check the electric choke and make sure there is voltage to it and check it for proper operation.

Also check the choke linkage that holds the choke open a little with vacuum. The electrically heated spring holds the choke closed and then relaxes, but the vacuum opens it back up. The vacuum diaphragm for the choke is right behind the heated choke spring housing and the linkage runs between this housing and the carburetor barrel. This linkage is hard to see. My linkage came off and my mileage was around 15 mpg. Now that I finally fixed it, while cruising on the freeway and country highways to Sebastopol and back (70 mph on I-80), I get just over 26 mpg. 4.10 gears. Around town is a bit lower. Mine passes smog.

I never thought about checking my choke. I get about 20 with 4.10 gears on my 79 4x4 and wondered if I should be getting better because I never drive faster than 60. I've got a weber, pacesetter, and offy. So I don't know why I wouldn't be getting better.

Brakes are not dragging air filter is fine . I was wondering how the fuel filter could make you wast more gas?
