I've read that 195/75-R14 is close to the stock tire size for a LUV.
If I want to run a 15"x7" or 15"x6" wheel, what series tire (50, 60, 70?) would be the same diameter as the 195/75-R14 tire?
I don't want the change to affect my speedo.
Also if anyone knows what the proper backspace would be, I'd appreciate it.
Thanx in advance
Dano

A 195/75-14 is a 25.5" tall tire.

To get that with a 15" tire, you could use:

195/70-15
or
225/60-15

Sorry, I don't know the backspacing.

Here's a really useful little link I use figure out my snow tires. I usually buy used tires, and can never seem to remember what fits...

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

I'm not sure of the backspacing either, but I do know that trooper II 15" rims seem to fit. I think they are referred to as a 'snowlflake' style, or something like that. The 6 bolt lug pattern is very common, but the backspacing can be an issue. I think some of the newer factory 17" GMC/GM rims are also a good fit. Check w/budbondo, I think he's running stock GMC wheels on his luv. If so, a call to your Chevy dealer would probably get you the backspacing. Also, if you cruise ebay, many times an aftermarket wheel will list the offset.

Here's another ongoing link on this, w/backspacing recommendations...

Good luck :)

Thanx guys,
1okey2go,looks like I'll go 225/60-R15, I'll just need to find what size (wheel) rim goes with that tire size.
nukeday thanx for that link, I was checking tire sizes for 16", 18" and 20" wheels, that computer is great.

GM wheels generally will not fit over the hubs on a 4x4. They typically have a 78 mm center hole, whereas the Luv needs at least 91 mm.

Nissan wheels and Toyota wheels usually will fit. They have a 100 mm center bore and are usually 15-25 mm offset.

If you could find a set of 16" Toyota Tundra wheels, they're a good fit and, I think, they look good. They'd work with a 205/60-16 or a 225/55-16.

We have 205/65/15 as a real common tyre size down here. I have two of them on the rear of my 86. I have 195/65/15 on the front and the sit flush with the outside edge of the guard. They are on trooper II alloys.

I have found that 7's will poke out unless you source some wheels with an IFS offset. Then you could be having issues with rubbing especially on the rear.

On the 79 i have a pair of 15x6 nissan chrome rims. Fitted with 205/65/15 tyres they fit sweet.

The toyota type 16x6's can be backspaced too far and will rub on the springs on the back.

Go with 20" wheels J/K. The nissan titans 18" and older 4X4 trucks15" and the pathfinders 18"/16"/15" work well on the luv. You can get a set of fullsize chevy Z-71 wheels 1995 or newer 16" and have the center hub bored to the correct size. Just a thought. I know I had to have my 20" Centerline wheels custom built to tuck under the fenders.

My 16", $50 Chevy Suburban wheels ended up costing me $150 to get on the truck.

First problem was the bore. After just sawing it out with a big hole saw (figuring "what the heck, it's covered by the dress plate"), I realized that's what the tire installer uses to secure the wheel for balancing, so it needs to be perfectly centered.

I had to make a custom 'spinny' rig and acquire some milling bits to accomplish that.

Next is the lugs/lug nuts. Most Chevy 6-lug are drilled for 14mm diameter lugs. Luvs are 12mm. Additionally, the lug nuts are a weird thing with threads on the outside that the trim plate screws to.

I ended up changing my truck to 14mm lugs. (24 lugs at $2.99/lug starts to add up.)

Finally, punch the holes in the trim plate for the front hubs to stick through and I'm done. Except of course for the $500 in new tires required.

The end result came out OK, but it was far more work and $$ than I should have put into it.

Ah Yeah but it looks sweet.

Ive just got 15" trooper alloys. They fit sweet.
195/65 on the front and 205/65 on the rear. The front tyres sit nice and flush with the guards.

Theres 50psi in those tyres.
