I have a 78 model with the 1.8l engine. I've been told that the signal generator in the distributor is bad and cannot find one. Does anyone have a source for these? Also has anyone switched one of these over to electronic ignition and if so how difficult is it and what is everything I would need and a source and how would I do it?
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

When I got my 78 I put the MSD 6a box in it,I dont know if that replaced the signal generator but it starts every single time. Easy to install, kind of expensive tho. you'll neede to use spiral wound plug wires(Ithink) it was about 150 bucks at kragen the wires can cost 100 bucks to. I think if I looked I could have got something comparable cheaper. Hope that helps.

I have heard of people switching the earlier model LUV's to electronic ignitions. You can get what you need off one of the later model pups. From what I have heard it is a pretty easy switch

The 81 transistorized ignition distributor is one digit off from the part number of the 80 point style ignition, the last digit. I'm told they're interchangeable. All you need then is the module. I went for the Mallory Unilite distributor, but thats $300. It works good, though.

the 81/82 is an electronic setup and it is very interchangeable. you need the distributor and cap with the pigtail and the module and coil. there's a write up in the info section...

I switched my 79 over to the later Luv's electronic ignition. I luv it. It starts right away, idles better, and the flat spot at mid-throttle is virtually gone.

I grabbed everything from a pick-n-pull. I got the whole distributer. I got the coil & igniter on its mounting bracket.

3 holes in the inner fender, 3 wires per the article on this site's info section, re-gapped the plugs to .045 and I was running.

If you can find the parts at a junk yard, I think it's the best performance improvement you can get for the $ and effort.

Oh yeah, what's a signal generator?
