The LUV starter has the solenoid (basically just a big switch to kick on the juice direct from the battery) built into the mechanism to engage the starter gear into the flywheel. There is a lever that forces the gear back along the shaft instead of a bendix assembly on the shaft. IIRC a bendix sort of spins the gear out from the starter just by the torque of the starter motor kicking over, and the stock LUV starter is setup different.
You can get the solenoid seperate from the starter, but its almost as expensive.
