When I bought my Luv is was sitting in the woods for a year, and i had a lot of grief with the fuel system. It clogged up 3 fuel fitlers and I had to rebuild the carb twice! I ended up taking out the gas tank and having it boiled out.
I do like the other suggetsiosn made. Doesnt hurt to change things like
condensor and points, spark plugs, etc.

Guess who drove their luv to work today?!?!?!?!
ME!
I adjusted the chock and the idle, changed the plugs, and will probably change the dis cap today along with the filters, just to make it run smoother. I'm so happy about this :D Whoo hoo!!!! :D
But....I'll definatly need more help when I change the shocks and struts and do the interior. I have big plans for that little thing; lol

Just hang in there Meow Kat! I'm driving an 80 shortbed that I bought last July off e-bay. I've had troubles an average of every 3 to 4 weeks for several months because it sat for at least 3 years before I got it! You have to have a LOT of patience to get that truck right and not get too upset when more problems come. And most likely they will! But you have good folks like 800XL to help you when unexpected problems come along, and eventually you too will have a truck that you can feel comfortable taking on a long trip knowing that your LUV will make it without any problems!

meh, the regulator on the alternator went out yesterday. Got stuck downtown with nowhere to park it except where there are meters, but it got me out into the desert and back the night before with no problems. Skipped work yesterday to try and get that part replaced, but it didn't come in before Shuck's closed. I also need to pull the head and replace the gaskets at the least, so under the hood again all weekend :)

Have fun replacing the head gasket, I've done it twice in the last year 8O Oh and on the shocks, the rears are super easy to replace, I did it the other day in about 15min with only a 17mm wrench, the fronts on the other hand are going to take a bit longer than that

Alright, replaced the regulator, started it up, got 3 houses down and it's doing the hesitation thing still....could it be something with the carb or vaccum hoses? I am at a loss again...some one help?

Nah my meaning was that when you clutch it to pull up for lights, give way etc, it races/revs at 14-1500 RPM. Blip the throttle and it drops back to normal idle speed.

No conking out etc. Sounds like you issue is a bit more sinister.

Have you tried the carb cleaner trick for gasket leaks? You really should think about replacing the vac lines anyway.
Have you checked the fuel pump?

I think I have a vac leak right off the carb; did the cleaner trick with that one...and I know I need to replace them all. Need to do a lot of stuff to it actually :) Going to work on it this weekend and see how it goes.

Ok, so the vac leaks are all fixed, now it is giving me clutch trouble...I go down the street and it wont go into 2nd without double clutching, and sometimes it has to float into gear. :x I don't know a dang thing about clutchs...so does anyone know someone that can fix this for me without costing a lot of money? I need to pay rent soon :(
Thanks all..

I would say it sounds more like a syncro in the trans then a clutch problem. I say this because you stated it was second gear and that implies that all other gears are ok. From a dead stop will it go into reverse ok?

Sometimes it goes into reverse at a stand still... sometimes it grinds. And I said second gear cause that's the one I was trying to get it into; I tryed to put it in 3rd too, but the same thing happened-had to double clutch or float it in. So once again the girl is clueless as to what to do. How do I check to see if it's the sync and where is it on the truck? (told you; clueless) Mine's a '75 btw.

Check your clutch master cylinder and see if it is low on fluid. Also look up under the dash and see if it is leaking where the push rod from the clutch pedal goes into the master cylinder. You might need to pull back the rubber boot a little bit to see if it is wet with brake fluid inside.

If the master cylinder looks good, get under the truck and look at the slave cylinder for leaks. Peel the boot back a little bit and see if it is wet.

I'd bet that one or both of them is leaking some. If it gets a whole lot better for a while when you pump the pedal 5-10 times, it is leaking fluid or sucking in some air into the system. On a truck that sat for a while, having to rebuild the clutch cylinders is not uncommon. It is best to do both, and flush the junk out of the lines while you are at it.

OK, I checked the boots like you said, and there is some wetness underneath on the slave; so that basically means that I need to rebuild the clutch or replace it right? (I know, I'm full of questions, but I really don't know a thing about clutches) And is it difficult to do this when you've never done it before? In other words, can I do this in a weekend or will it take longer?

See, what you have is a hydraulic clutch. What that means is, instead of a cable between the pedal and the clutch, you have a small hydraulic system ,very much like what the brakes use.

The pedal pushes the master cylinder, which pushes the fluid through a steel line to the slave cylinder , which pushes the clutch.

It sounds like you may need to rebuild the slave cylinder. The clutch itself is probably fine. It's just that when you push the pedal, the clutch is not releasing all the way, because of the faulty slave cylinder.
