 ok,, we have just bought our 1980 chevy luv automatic,
we were looking for a flexplate (flywheel) found that (155$ later)
but now haveing more problems..... we might have a short in our
igintion the unaversal one stinks cause all the wires dont line up.
we are really confused cause we looked at this sites diagram
and it looks greek to us. there are 5 wires. :: ig, acc, am, st, r.
what do they all mean???????????????????????????????????????
the unaversal one only has :: st, acc, bat, ign.... now where dose the
am go and what in the world is am????
after all that we drained the battery over this! :x it kinda stinks!
but anywho... we also have a timning problem i think,,,, when the
engine turns over it rocks reall hard and it want to die, it sputters and
shakes and dies a few times....................... we are sooo new at this,,,
we need step by step directions/////// we just need to get this truck running befor we can have fun with extras. if you can help ...... thank you

well as far as the truck running goes it sounds like the timing is too far advanced. Loosen up the Dist and just move it around untill it starts sounding better. Im perty shure that counter clockwise will retard the timing which is what i would start whith. As far as the wiring goes i dont know anything about the universal kits but i do know that the ignitions off of the 81-82 LUVs is a VARY easy swap and i wrote a tech article on that swap (i did it on my 80 4x4).
As far as the wiring abreiviations go, ig is ignition or the switched power, acc is accsesory whith will just run the radio and heater motor but nothing else, am im drawing a blank on that one, st is start whith will give power to the starter and then r is just run which just feeds power to all the systems. I hope that helps some.

go with a weber DEFINATELY, my dad and a guy he works with have re-built the hitachi carb that's stock before and even after the re-build it still ran like crap... they're far too complex to just simply re-build really... so go with the weber you'll be happy you did, and just ask around, most anyone on here will tell you to go with a weber

look for an import performance shop. Ones that specialise in older VWs and Audis things of that nature are garenteed to have one on the books. What you looking for is the 32/36 pregresive 2barrel. Theres a kit that makes it perty much bolt on. Its a great carb and vary easy to work on, your probly looking at about $400 for the full kit. I would do this, the Hitachis dont rebuild well and are garbage in comparison.
