i can't figure out why i keep running through pumps, the last two i went through in the last month. I have three theories.

1. debris from the tank is clogging the small filter in the fuel pump, making it work harder and just frying the thing. However, my inline fuel filter between the tank and the fuel pump is pretty much clean. No big debris or murky gasoline.

2. Too many or not enough volts going to the fuel pump? Perhaps a weak ground is upping amperage? Maybe?

3. I have a large speed bump outside my house that i hit going too fast on occasion. The last fuel pump that went out did so about 100 feet after i hit that speed bump. Today i hit that speed bump sort of fast and the damn fuel pump went out a mile down the road after driving fine for that whole mile. Could something mechanical be broken with semi-wreckless driving? I mean, i drive the thing like a grandpa for the most part.

If anybody has had this problem in the past and found a decent solution. I'm all ears! Thanks.

I think I would go with the questionable ground. That would explain the speed bumb shaking the ground loose smoking the pump ? Just guessin.

Yeah, I just re grounded the ground wire in a much better position. Started it up and hit the gas, the carb didn't even lag like it normally does. I think (hope) that was the problem and it's fixed. Going to check the voltage at the pump this evening. Rumor has it about 12.75-12.85v is what is ideal? Hope it's fixed cuz the guys at oreillys are startin to dick em around with these fuel pump warranties.

Been having the same problem. The stock style "clicker" pumps all fail within weeks. I paid twice as much for a Carter that was specifically designed for Ethanol fuel, and it lasted about a year. This time I installed a Holley Red, which so far is working better than anything else except for the loud electric motor noise coming from under the bed now.

My opinion is that it's the Ethanol in the fuel. My tank is clean, new filters installed before the pump and before the carb. Both were clean this time as usual, but I changed them anyway.

A loose or bad ground will definately stop a fuel pump but I don't see how it would permanently kill the pump. My theory is fuel pump quality has gone down. About everything on the road now days is fuel injected, so the low pressure carb units left are not getting the attention to detail quality they used to. And yes, ethenol in the fuel does plenty of damage to fuel system components also. Heck, the Luv original OEM fuel pumps ran for 10+ years with no problems at all.

Could too much voltage be the problem? I'm getting around 14.1-14.2v at the pump. Think that could fry it? it is weird because even after they break and quit pumping they still clicks and hum as if the unit is still working.

I am sure my tank is somewhat dirty, I get small bits of debris in the fuel filter but its really nothing. I'm talking a couple of grains of sand, I don't see that slipping through the filter but who knows maybe it does. The only other thing I could think of was maybe I got low on gas and sucked air through the pump and that killed it? I don't know. However if anybody has anything to tell me about too much voltage going to the pump do let me know!

Doubt if its a voltage problem. Truck off with a fully charged battery should be 12.5--12.8 volts normal. With the truck running everything in the truck sees 13.6--14.4 volts, completely normal. Any fuel pump should operate in that range with no problem.
ON EDIT: The fact that it still "clicks or hums" tells me that probably it is mechanical failure inside the pump.

I redid my ground wire, and it didn't make a difference. I just lost fuel pump number 4. I am on my last warranty pump and it is getting to be embarrassing facing the guys at Oreillys again and again and again. So I've got two more questions maybe somebody in here can help me out.

1. when I installed my Weber carburetor, could I have hooked up/capped one of the incorrect hoses? I am specifically talking about the smaller hose that ran into the old carburetor. Not the main hose but the smaller one. I have it capped off, does it need to be plugged into the vacuum advance port or something? I apologize if that is a dumb questions but I am really reaching right now.

2. I have noticed on my last two failed fuel pumps that my gas level was just below half a tank, is there a chance that whatever hose inside the fuel tank isn't reaching the bottom of the tank, & I am sucking air and burning that fuel pump out very quickly?

this last fuel pump went out much like the first one did over six months ago, I let the truck set for two weeks after it ran great, I came out to start it one day to go to work, the fuel pump was no longer sucking or pumping any fuel but still humming and clicking along like it's working.. what the f***!!!

I realize this is a long and monotonous forum post, I apologize and appreciate any insight. Thank you.

Try a name brand and rebuildable pump. Better to spend the money on a holley, carter etc. That will last. I went through 3 parts store pumps before I did a v8 swap and got a good pump

Did you pull the fuel line to see if you were getting flow? The reason I ask is because the needle and seat likes to stick on these things, so the fuel bowl doesn't fill. Another scenario that seems like a fuel pump but really isn't.
