I am doing a 215,000 mile check up, in, around. What is the proper compression for the 4 cylinder engine. And, thank you, in advance, for the assistance.

Book says engine series 1-4 should be 160-163
Series 5-12 should be 165-170

That's for a new engine, at 215,000 it will be less. Whatever it is it should be within 10psi high to low in all four.

Yes Thats true but that's why I put about a 5psi difference but 10 lower is good too..

Guys,
This really does mess with my head! The truck runs great, uses no oil, gets about 25-28 miles per gallon, and seems to have plenty of power. However, the test showed compression at about 60 on the outside, and 40 on the inside. We are going to get a different tester, just to confirm the low pressure.
Ideas?
thanks,

I hope you meant cranking speed, not idle speed.
Test each cylinder with the throttle wide open, normal cranking speed for 3-8 seconds, all spark plugs removed. Then repeat with a couple teaspoonsful of motor oil into each plug hole, see if there is a significant increase over dry.

Correct, oil will always make a difference and raise the compression because of the additional room it takes up in the combustion chamber. But--it should not make a major difference in a good engine.

If the rings are bad and the valves are bad you will have a drastically lower compression test.
