Allright guys here it is I have three questions for you.

1. Does anyone know of a Kit you can buy to change my 78 luv into a 12 volt system and is it really worth it?

2. Does anyone know of a Overdrive kit that can be put onto the tranny because at 60mph my luv becomes a large Gas Hog!

3. About every other time I turn off my luv about 20 seconds after it has stopped running it will backfire? Is my thermostat letting the engine run to hot? I put a gauge set on my luv and everything is in spec? What is it?

thanks for the help.

it is a 12 volt system.

a higher ratio rear end would be more cost effective.

check your timing. do a tune up. :D

hope this helps.

it should be a 12volt system. About the back firing i agree whith luvforme. ANd you should be able to find something like 3.73 gears out of a luv or early isuzu diesel pick up.

The backfire problem could be caused by the emissions controls. I had the same problem with the stock motor (1975) and i thought it was the mixture control valve. It went away when i rebuilt the stock motor and eliminated the emissions system all together. Check for air leaks throughout your entire engine just to make sure.

You can also find a rear end out of an s10 with 3.73 gears with little effort. It bolts right in and all you would have to do is get a new driveshaft fabbed.

the reason why its backfiring like that is because you have low backpressure in your exhaust.
