Having the street race backgroud that I do, I tend to think you can't pin all the blame on the street racing. I mean, let's face it, the guy was a dumbass for driving that fast around a crowd or around other cars. The fact that he was street racing just means there was two dumbasses.
I think making the equation street racing kills, is like saying guns kill. A gun needs someone holding it to kill, so is it the gun that's responsible or the person holding it?
I'm not condoning all street racing. I'm just saying, let's not make the blanket statement that street racing = death.
Street racing now-a-days seems NOTHING like it was back when I used to go. Now it's more like a free-for-all act like a jackass spree.
We used to make a serious effort to be safe. If anyone showed up drinking or drunk, they got asked to leave. If they showed up with missing lug nuts, or something unsafe, no one would race them.
Every accident I saw over the years (when I used to go all the time), could have easily been prevented. Most of the time, us regulars even knew ahead of time when something was going to happen. Things like racing next to the crowd, racing the wrong direction, racing while drinking, etc. Every time we'd call it ahead of time. It'd be like, "that asshole is going to pack someone". And sure enough, he would. And we'd run up to his car and he'd be drunk.
Then the news paper would blame it on street racing. The reality was, he was drunk and driving like an asshole.
That's my 2 cents. Feel free to disagree.
