would it be better to swap out my points distributor for an electronic and forget the ignition box or... get the ignition box with my stock distributor?

I have an MSD and ditched the points. Replaced with Pertronix Ignitor module in stock distributor. Would never recommend staying with points.

One method is to use a Pertronix Ignitor module inside the stock distributor, another is to do a total swap to an electronic distributor. Do a search for both, there are several threads already started with plenty of info.
